This place is a mark on the good name of Hyatt Hotels.

My visit got off to a bad start from the beginning. I showed up a couple of hours before check-in but decided to see if my room was ready anyway. The woman at the front desk told me, yes, my room was ready but if I wanted to check in early I would need to pay $50.

What?

I mean, I get charging for late checkout. You have to juggle housekeeping and rooms to cover for the other guests coming in afterward, but if my room is ready what does it cost to let me use it?

I'm not sure what vibe Unscripted is going for, but if it is 1960s motel on the outskirts of town, they nailed it.

The hotel is next to a parking garage, and you actually share the hotel elevator with the garage itself. Go one way and you can badge into the hotel. Go the other and you see and smell cars.

On the upside the room was clean, if rather plain. Room 217 is dominated by a big structural pillar. I was only there for one night, for which I am thankful, but the bed was comfortable and there was hot water for the shower.

I chose Unscripted because I am working on gaining more status with Hyatt, but after this stay I am done with the brand. I'll go back to spending most of my time in Marriott's, and there is one right across the street.

Wish I could give it 5 stars. The fact that they repurposed and revived this hotel is simply amazing. They did a really nice job of it.And it gives you all the seventies vibes. However, this morning when I got locked in the parking deck at five a m.Because my card wouldn't work on the entry door back into the hotel.The front desk clerk was too high to understand what I was talking about. He thought I couldn't get into my room and patiently explained to me that I could get into my room because I got into the front door... There must be an aerospace college around here somewhere.Because I am obviously dealing with America's next wave of rocket scientists... If you could get your staff and order, this would be a first rate hotel.

Yes. The location is centralized and with in walking distance to everything including the DPAC. The staff is amazing and the only reason for the 3 stars. The rooms, they are less desirable. There was no shower door, water ends up everywhere on the floor when stepping out so make sure you put a towel down. There is a gap at the bottom of the entrance door (forgot to take a picture), put another towel down. The walls are super thin and the windows/door block no sound, you will hear everything, including a random party at 5:04a. Lastly, the pool is OPEN to the public. So if you are traveling with children please keep this in mind. Maybe this was just my room and it's location but I won't be back.

Room was very small but quaint. However my main grievance is with the false advertising. The hotel claims to have a grab and go breakfast but no such thing exist. You are set up for a standard hotel continental breakfast by the wording on their website, posters around the hotel, and by how the hotel reception refers to breakfast hut when you actually attempt to eat you realize you have to place an order like it is a restaurant. Not only that but the choices are small and the food all frozen! So great for a night to sleep in Durham but you better have planned ahead on what food you are going to eat.

This is a fantastic property with great potential, but I won't be back, and I won't recommend this property to my clients who book large blocks, for two primary reasons:

1) At about 12:30pm, I came to check in and was told there's an "early check-in fee" of $50. After some protest and a request to talk to the daytime manager, the fee was waived. As a World of Hyatt member (not a ton of stays or points), I received a routine followup email asking for a review. I reviewed and mentioned the fee. A day later I received a response basically reiterating the early check-in policy. I've stayed in several thousand hotels traveling for work and never seen a similar policy; most of the time I'm readily accommodated if the room is ready (and the one that day was).
2) The night desk person was extraordinarily rude to my guest and to me when we got locked out. Her key didn't work and left her stranded on the parking deck. I just left mine in the room and called the desk because I had no access to even get to the front desk.

All this after we noticed the hotel from our room across the street at the Marriott and decided to change properties because the Unscripted looked so cool. It could be, but they're choosing otherwise.
