Downtown Districts
Six distinct neighborhoods, one vibrant downtown. Dive into Durham's best places to eat, nightlife, entertainment and activities. Every block delivers something extraordinary.
Downtown Durham doesn't do simple. We're filled with industrial grit and creative fire, award-winning restaurants in tobacco warehouses, rooftop cocktails before Broadway shows, underground music venues alongside James Beard-nominated bars. In just one square mile, you'll find six distinct districts, each with its own personality, plus The Bullpen social district that lets you wander freely with a drink in hand across all of downtown.
Our tobacco heritage is everywhere you look – the brick warehouses and structures built by the American Tobacco Company still stand, now reimagined as restaurants, offices and entertainment venues. This is where Durham earned the nickname "Bull City," a nod to Bull Durham Tobacco, one of the American Tobacco Company's flagship brands. The bull logo itself came from Colman's Mustard in Durham, England, creating a transatlantic connection that stuck. Today, you'll find that legacy honored throughout downtown: a life-size statue of Major the Bull stands in CCB Plaza, and countless businesses and organizations carry the bull in their names. We've come full circle – from the City of Tobacco to the City of Medicine – but we've never forgotten where we started.
Downtown welcomes everyone and celebrates authentic self-expression – you'll see it in the rainbow flags of our vibrant LGBTQIA+ community, in the legacy of historic Black Wall Street where Black entrepreneurship thrived and continues to flourish today, and in the diverse small businesses representing cultures from dozens of countries. Ethiopian coffee ceremonies, Mexican taquerías, homestyle Indian cuisine and flavors from across the globe create a tapestry of international cuisine alongside community gathering places, art galleries and venues where we come together to share our stories and traditions. You'll find yourself in a National Historic District, walking past National Register landmarks and cutting-edge performance venues like DPAC, the Durham Performing Arts Center, and the Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP). And everywhere, you'll taste why Durham's food scene has earned national recognition, from James Beard-nominated and MICHELIN-recognized restaurants and bars to family recipes cooked with heart.
Downtown is walkable, bikeable and serviced by The Bull Ride, a free, flexible-route shuttle running Thursday-Saturday evenings (flag it down or call 919-682-BULL). Park once and explore it all or take your time discovering one district per visit.
And, just beyond downtown's eastern edge, you'll find Old Five Points, an emerging neighborhood where a new generation of small businesses is energizing a once-sleepy stretch. From imaginative cuisine to academic-themed bars and art galleries, it's Durham's next chapter unfolding in real time.
Either way, you're about to understand why downtown Durham has become one of North Carolina's most dynamic destinations.
