The Carolina Theatre
Overview
Be sure to catch a show at Carolina Theatre, an institution that’s been standing in the heart of downtown Durham since 1926. Elevated to iconic status through weathering more than nine decades of social, political and economic change, the Carolina Theatre is a source of civic pride, an important marker of historic change and a crucial resource for education in the arts. In the past, live shows have featured Ronald Reagan and Katharine Hepburn. Tour the theatre or get a ticket to see a film, a live event or an educational program. This renovated 1926 Beaux-Arts style theatre was also the site of civil rights protests in the early 1960s, now documented inside the theatre's “Confronting Change” exhibit.

As I just posted to my Instagram account, Keb Mo has the best warm and inviting voice, and so much stamina. Plus he speaks so gently and lovingly about community/home. Put a Woman in Charge had many dancing in the aisle, and his band is terrfic too. Since I now live in Virginia, it had been awhile since I have been at the Theatre. Beautifully restored and happy 100 years! I plan to come back and enjoy another show! Highly recommend. -
The Carolina Theater Durham provides us with a range of entertainment that is not matched within date night driving distance. Everyone on staff is there because they wish to be, which comes through in their interactions. Fresh popped popcorn is another calling card. Look for the festivals, and the retro film series to fill in this you'd missed in the past or wish to enjoy again. Live Theater performances are what started my original attraction. The actress and shows have upheld the integrity of the arts.

Been to multiple shows here over the past 3 years. Always a great time. The staff is friendly and helpful. -
Beautiful Theater, very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. I only wished the live orquesta would be visible, but I understand the reason why they weren’t. I went to see the Swan Lake and it was worth every penny, will definitely be coming back. -
The Carolina Theatre has such a great atmosphere… it feels like a real community space, not just a place to see a movie. I especially recommend their double features and retro nights which are always a fun experience. I’ve been to several, including Jurassic Park with Anaconda and Fargo with Thelma & Louise, and they’ve all been memorable. It’s one of my favorite places to catch a classic movie with a great crowd.
