Nikos

This lively Mediterranean eatery includes a cozy patio nestled along the historic brick street. The menus and decor pay homage to Giorgio Bakatsia’s upbringing in Greece and history in Durham—a revival of one of his former restaurants, Niko’s Greek Taverna, which was in this area many years ago. Delicious small meze and larger plates embracing ancient flavors from Greece and its surrounding regions are perfect for sharing around a table with friends.

We had an outstanding meal here on a Sunday night. We arrived early in the evening to a small crowd but by the time we left the dining area was full. Everything was prepared to perfection, the food was fresh, and the spices and flavors used in all the dishes were tasty, well balanced, and inventive without being overpowering. The Branzino and Byzantine Chicken were excellent, as was the Spanakopita and even the salad. The banana walnut baklava dessert was outstanding. With each course our expectations, which were high to begin with, were exceeded. On top of that, the service was excellent; friendly, personable, helpful, and attentive throughout the evening. This was our first visit but definitely not our last. -
Had a wonderful dinner last night at Nikos Restaurant and truly enjoyed the entire experience. From the moment we arrived, the hospitality stood out. The host warmly welcomed us, and both Miguel and Margaret took exceptional care of us throughout the evening. We were celebrating a friend’s birthday, and they went out of their way to make the night feel truly special. The space has a beautiful warmth to it, blending rustic charm with an elegant Mediterranean vibe that immediately sets the tone for a relaxed yet refined evening. The food was absolutely delicious, with mysterious, vibrant flavors that surprise and delight with every bite. Each dish felt thoughtful and beautifully presented. The hospitality and warmth here are truly top-notch, and the service made the entire evening feel effortless and memorable. A lovely spot in Durham that we look forward to visiting again. -
I had a phenomenal time at Nikos with a friend for brunch! We admired the decorations and the very pleasing industrial look to the place, and the atmosphere was welcoming. This place feels perfect for a brunch with friends or a date night. The service was also great! They were very attentive and welcoming.
But of course, the food. I had the knufe pancakes, my friend had the brioche banana french toast, and we shared the braised short rib grilled cheese. Overall, we loved the creativity of the flavor combinations and really enjoyed the taste and plating of each and every one of our dishes! I particularly liked how my pancakes were sweet because of the syrup and pistachio and savory (because of the mozzarella filling, which reminded me of an arepa). My friend’s french toast was amazing too and I loved how the french toast was spongy and soaked up the flavor from the custard. The short ribs were soft and tender and so flavorful. The texture of everything including the bread, pancakes, and french toast were spot on as well. I have recommended this place to my friends and we’re so excited to go again. -
Wonderful from start to finish! We felt enthusiastically welcomed from the moment we stepped up to the door until our goodbyes. Great food-from the famous flaming saganaki to the soup to the halloumi boats to the special Greek dessert (can’t remember the name, but phyllo layered with custard). Very creative cocktails and mocktails served by a delightful, skilled bartender. (Try the pink negroni- wow!) Every server was personable, competent and kind. Very cozy and interesting interior too. Expecting many repeat visits! -
We enjoyed a great dinner at Nikos in Durham recently before a show at DPAC. The Octopus Carpaccio and Hummus appetizers were delicious and large enough for 4 to share. The salads were inventive and flavorful, and our favorite entree was the deconstructed Short Rib Pastitsio. Unfortunately we didn’t save room for dessert this trip. We dined AL Fresco, the service was spot on, we’ll definitely be back.
