Was on a journey to find some seafood when I came across this worthy spot. Very small but overall amazing. The guy who took our order was really nice and gave us some suggestions on items. He was very helpful and pleasant the entire time. This will definitely be my seafood spot when I am in the mood for some seafood. We had the flounder, trout, catfish, spicy Mahi and shrimp. Everything was amazing and very flavorful. Ohhhhh and the honey hush puppies or whatever they are were amazing as well as the 1/2 lemonade 1/2 sweet tea was delicious!!!!! -
De-licious!
This is not your typical calabash seafood establishment. The flavors and unique pairings of spices/herbs was an experience in itself.
We ordered the shrimp, catfish, & whiting plates, a side of stewed collards greens, and the lemonade/tea mix.
All plates come with a side of these fried potato wedges with onions and green peppers & a small cup of coleslaw. All were delicious. The coleslaw has dill in it which gives it a unique, but flavorful taste.
The fish and shrimp all were seasoned well (not over or under), but we do wish the shrimp were fried a little harder. However, it was all very tasty.
Next, we tasted the tea/lemonade mix. This was so GOOD. Not overly sweet, it had the perfect amount of sweetness and tasted homemade.
Lastly, we tried the stewed collard greens. These were fresh, and flavorful as well. Pot liquor included.
This was an amazing experience & I look forward to visiting this establishment again. -
I’d give this 6 stars if I could!! We were blown away by SSJ. I’d eat the Hush-Honeys every day if it was feasible. The crab cakes weren’t my favorite, but that’s a personal preference. Reallllly enjoyed the shrimp (get it fried) and the sauces were so good as well! Fried potatoes were out of this world. Get the lemonade, too, perfectly sweet but tart.
Best part is everyone working there was so nice. Line was long and it was busy, but food came out actually really quickly for a party of 3.
Will without a doubt come back!! -
The food was fresh and came out fast, that's always a plus. Unfortunately I did not enjoy the seafood itself. The sauces helped a lot (they were very flavorful), I can't waste 34 bucks so I dipped every peace 😂. I purchased the trout & shrimp combination in addition to a side of hush honeys. The hush honeys and crispy potatoes were the best things on the plate. -
Saltbox has great service and the food has a good reputation around town. We had our hopes pretty high but were ultimately disappointed in the taste of the food.
The plates are very expensive for the portion size. We only tried the flounder, since the restaurant was out of catfish. Everything was fresh, and their fries are great. However, the flounder batter was unfortunately lacking and somehow tough instead of crispy or buttery. Perhaps it wouldve been better if we would've eaten it fresh instead of driving home first. I didnt like the slaw, but admittedly, it may just be the style of slaw I don't like.
I thought it was odd that the plates dont automatically come with a small portion of hushpuppies either. That's usually a seafood restaurant staple in the south. And for 25 dollars a plate, it was even more disappointing to see that missing.
Maybe we've caught an off day for them, but for now, we were not impressed.
