The overall stay was good and the staff was pleasant, but I did experience some inconveniences that affected my experience. The biggest issue was having to change rooms three different times before getting one that was suitable. In my first room, there was standing water in the bathtub, a half-burned cigarette left in the shower, and human hair on the shower walls. After reporting the issue, I was moved to another room, but that room also had standing water and hair throughout the bed that appeared to be a mixture of human and pet hair, which I understand can happen at a pet-friendly hotel. I then had to go through another room change, which took about 30 minutes total walking back and forth and checking rooms. Thankfully, the third room was fine with no issues. I also noticed that I wasn't the only one experiencing problems, as some of my friends who checked in had issues with their rooms as well. Aside from the inconvenience of changing rooms multiple times, the stay itself was okay, but I do think housekeeping and room inspections could use more attention before guests check in. -
Poor room maintenance, torn upholstery late night check in was a poor experience. Day staff Christina and Jade were extremely helpful. The rooms have basic standards but upkeep needs to improve. -
Stayed her for a weekend, only because the prices were $30-$50 below what the other hotels were charging in the same area. I was a little skeptical and thought it would be rundown. Hotel experience was very good. The rooms were very nice and large, everything was spotless including the kitchen (including dishes and utensils), the bathroom and the bed. I travel a lot and everything had the feel of a four star hotel. It was also a 10-20 minute drive to everywhere, including the airport and UNC.
And the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. There was no handsoap in my room, and they immediately gave me more. Complimentary coffee or tea in the lobby. Checkin and checkout was seamless.
Would definitely stay here again. The surrounding area was safe. But if you do travel three or four blocks outside of the corporate park, there might be some shady, unsafe things happening at night. -
Dear Candlewood Suites of Durham-Rtp by IHG
Extremely disappointing stay unfortunately, I cannot recommend this hotel. I’m usually not one to leave negative reviews, but my experience at Candlewood Suites Durham was disappointing enough that I feel future guests deserve an honest heads-up. For the price, I expected a basic level of cleanliness, comfort, professionalism, and hospitality. Unfortunately, the overall experience fell well below those expectations. Several aspects of the stay left me feeling like the hotel was more interested in collecting payment than making sure guests actually had a pleasant experience.
What was especially frustrating was the lack of attention to the concerns I brought up. When you pay your hard-earned money for a hotel room, you shouldn't have to repeatedly explain why something isn't acceptable. A guest should feel heard, respected, and valued not like they're being inconvenient for expecting the services and accommodations they paid for.
I’m not expecting a five-star resort. I’m expecting clean, comfortable, properly maintained accommodations and professional customer service. Those are reasonable expectations for any hotel.
Unfortunately, this stay was a reminder that a recognizable hotel name doesn't automatically guarantee a quality experience.
My honest advice, If you're visiting Durham and have other reputable options within your budget, I would seriously consider those alternatives before choosing this property. Your money is hard-earned, and where you stay should feel worth what you paid.
Hopefully management takes these reviews seriously and makes meaningful improvements. Until then, I personally would not return. -
The front desk man that checked me in was dismissive and tried to make me pay a 100.00 deposit on a room fully paid in advance (bogus charge?) I've stayed here before and was never asked for a deposit. The water temp. in the bathroom was cold to tepid and never got hot.
