We had a great experience at Area Modern in Durham! The owner was knowledgeable and helped us find the perfect couch and two lounge chairs for our new space. The owner does take some time to warm up to you but he answered all of my questions and took extra time to walk me through all the fabric options. The quality is excellent, and everything looks amazing in our home. I'm excited to come back for future pieces!

Ok, I truly get what people are saying about the owner coming off as rude and hostile. I get it, he initially came off like that to me. However, when I started talking to him, he warmed up and was very kind and helpful. He made some great suggestions and I finally purchased a custom younger Jude sofa. It arrived just a few days ago, and it is stunning!

He’s been in the furniture business for a while, so he knows his stuff. He has a great collection of quality unique mostly local pieces that you won’t find at the big box stores. Looking forward to returning to buying more furniture for my home.

Second time I’ve been in this store and had an odd experience. Today shopping for lighting and received the most bizarre customer service. Upon entering, the owner is instantly hostile as to why we are in the store and then proceeds to be make strange comments as we browse. This store has lovely modern stuff but the owner is definitely missing the southern charm that makes shopping locally fun in Durham. Expect to be judged while shopping here.

My wife and I bought a sofa, and we love it. Raffaele was a pleasure to work with, helping us decide which fabric would best complement the rest of our living room. We will be shopping here the next time we need new furniture! I would highly recommend Area Modern!

Third time in the store. Same experience, beautiful furniture, layout, vignettes, lighting, accessories, color pallets and style with the pieces shown. I'm in the contract furniture industry, and their look, feel, collections and pricing is very competitive and the aesthetic is top-notch.

It ends there..... as the experience with the owner / staff was overtly negative yet again. Always appears bothered / disinterested. Just stands behind the desk and stares at a monitor like he is searching for a job on LinkedIn.

The first time we visited, I picked up a couple of accessories that were interesting and said I don't see a price on these and he says "it's because they're not for sale" and I said "then why are they on the furniture?" He said "because I choose to have them there!" That's a very friendly response to try and sell home decor product to a customer ....agreed?

This time we visited the store and I looked at the accessories and I told my friends - "oh these aren't for sale as we learned last time they're just for decoration" the owner turns head up from the monitor and says "yes they are, the prices are on the bottom, just look!"

I took my friend there, solely for the purpose of showing her upscale, interesting furnishings with an upscale design and aesthetic to furnish her entire new home. We left there with nothing, no ideas, no brochures, no fabric swatches, no vision , no business card, no website info to get more ideas on options, etc,. Nothing except the memory of a disinterested owner/staff member who was bothered by every question on fabric, availability, leadtime, options, etc. all one-word in negative tone answers all with an overt bothered vibe that we will never go back there again to have to experience. 😡👎🏻💥. Picture shows some of the items shown that were or were not available for sale who knows - was afraid to look/ask!
