Such a cool, unpretentious, inviting place to listen to jazz. It’s a nonprofit off the beaten path. There’s no minimum food/beverage charge. Instead, there’s a small bar in the back run by volunteers. It makes great music accessible—truly a gem, and I can’t wait to come back.

Sharp 9 is a performance hall devoted to live jazz music. They serve wine and beer but no food. They feature high level talent regularly and are not pretentious but love the enjoyment and promotion of jazz. Check it out!

The volunteers make sure you are accommodated. The owners are incredible people and the music is always a great experience!!.
You never know who may show up as the last surprise guest was Branford Marsalis.

What can I say: Sharp 9 is a rare gem that we are unbelievably fortunate to have in Durham.
It is an authentic jazz club and jazz music hub that is intimate, welcoming, friendly and full of vibrant jazz music every week. It gives local and touring jazz musicians home for their classical jazz and more creative jazz explorations.
It is truly a pleasure to attend Sharp 9 as a member of an audience: intimate seating at small tables each thoughtfully decorated with a small candle for ambience; a good view of musicians from any seat; great selection of soft bevareges, beer and wine and (!) fantastic music (!).
It is also a great music laboratory and mentoring environment for rising jazz musicians and youth through its music school program. Sharp 9 offers big band, combos and lessons and does it in supportive and very warm and welcoming manner, where youth feels inspired, nurtured and mentored. Combos for adults are superb too, giving an outlet to established or jazz-curious musicians. My family has now tried them all.
I am so glad that we discovered Sharp 9 in our own neighborhood corner, after being surprisingly unaware of this fantastic jazz joint for some years. I am now an unapologetic fan!
You have to check this place out, if you are interested in jazz music. You will not regret it!

This is THEE Premier authentic str8 ahead, mainstream & traditional jazz hidden Gem of Durham!
So unassuming yet tasteful. Nothing fancy nor does it need to be, save the fluff, this place is a MUST for true jazz enthusiasts like myself.

This is a gem for seeing jazz locally. A nonprofit, you could drive by this location and have no idea how great it is inside. This is a small, intimate venue where you can listen and be close to the performers.
