Beautiful, exciting new space that Durham needs!! Endless opportunities to connect with people over art and have fun, from in the galleries to upstairs in the studios! The building itself has a nice balance of modern and nostalgic structures welcoming to anyone, regardless of art experience level! Be on the lookout for future events, there's something for everyone and you won't want to miss🔥 -
Haven't made it inside yet, and it already has me. I walked past under a gray sky and stopped at a two-story box on West Trinity painted a pink you could almost eat. South Beach meets Brooklyn, a block down from the stab-n-grab bodega. Oh my.
The storefront is nearly all glass, so the gallery performs for the sidewalk whether it's open or not. Through it you get the bones: the original pressed tin ceiling left dark and raw, rusted steel beams, spiral duct, and a pale long-plank floor that throws light around the room. A hot pink Madonna and Child on casters stands right at the window in the same pink as the facade, sacred image and street front in one color, and the big painting on the center wall wears a gold sun for a head, with gold roots pouring off the bottom. My own reflection landed over the whole hang, organic hand wished ceremonial matcha latte in hand, which felt right. I manage renovations of old buildings for a living, so I know what it costs to keep a ceiling like that. The owners planned on a year and spent five, part of it hauling more than 500 tons of contaminated soil out from under this place.
This is what a gallery can do for a block. Laura Ritchie, who founded The Carrack and watched rising property costs push it out of downtown, bought this building with her loving wife Shirlette Ammons rather than rent, and put a gallery, artist studios, and a recording studio under one roof. Intersectional Bohemian dopamine salvation, and that's from the sidewalk. Next trip to Durham I'm going in, and so should you. -
