Bennett Place is the site of the largest troop surrender and the effective end of the Civil War. In April 1865, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston and his Union adversary, General William T. Sherman, met in Durham at Bennett Place where Gen. Johnston surrendered the Southern armies in the Carolinas, Florida, and Georgia. Today, the site includes restored historic structures, a visitor center and museum, special living history events and tours.

Very well maintained lots of informational signage about the area and the house. I'm sure the informational center has great information, but I came on a day that they were closed. Always a great day when you can see a little bit of history

Bennett Place is such a hidden gem full of history and charm. The staff and volunteers are so knowledgeable and passionate, making the stories of the site come alive in such a meaningful way. The grounds are beautifully kept, peaceful, and perfect for learning as well as reflecting. Visiting here gave me such a deep appreciation for an important piece of our nation’s history. Highly recommend to anyone — whether you’re a history lover or just looking for a memorable and educational experience.

The Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The tour was incredibly cheap and also has a movie. The museum is small but has a battle flag, firearms and other items.

I have wanted to visit Bennett Place for a long time and finally got the opportunity. Jim, our tour guide was a wealth of knowledge. It was neat to see that the old road was still intact.
Did you know that there were three other Confederate surrenders? Neither did I. Checkout the informational panel inside the visitor center.

Easily a star visit and tells an incredible story that everyone should know. We appreciated the visit, front to back...the video, the museum, the tour, the structures. Consequential history was right here during one of the most important months of our nation.

Enjoyed the guided tour that is scheduled three times a day. The tour leader was enthusiastic and provided great information - I always thought Appomattox was the surrender of Confederacy until this visit.
