I rented a vehicle for Thanksgiving last week… it was dirty when I rented it, the guys says they can’t clean them on the lot … but you could wipe the snot off the steering wheel!! I took it to the car wash and spent extra money when I brought it back as we drove through snow and salt. Yes I had a dog in it but I vacuumed and used a roller … we found bay bell wrappers, Cheetos and SunChips in this car yet we were charged $50 for there being maybe some dog hair … but that I should be grateful it wasn’t $450 … they said it smelled … if it did it wasn’t dog it may have been onions from the burgers we brought home!! They don’t say no dogs they say no excessive dog hair … if I vacuumed and used a roller it wasn’t excessive! -
I love renting from this location. Shabbir is very helpful, polite, and attentive when it comes to my vehicle interest. I will definitely continue renting from Avis in Durham. -
Renter beware! Avis charged a cleaning fee of $250 for having returned a minivan with sand on the floor following an April 2026 family road trip to FL, see pic. This charge was posted to our credit card over a week after we returned the vehicle and we never received notice of the charge in writing, so it came as a surprise on our next credit card statement. It’s particularly aggravating that Avis rented this minivan to us without cleaning/detailing between customers. The service agent on hand stated that the vehicle was in acceptable condition at time of both pick-up and drop-off. Multiple phone calls to customer service further complicated matters as we were told different things. According to Avis Terms & Conditions: “2.6(c) Cleaning Fees. You will pay a reasonable fee for cleaning the Vehicle's interior or exterior for what we determine in our sole discretion are excessive stains, trash, dirt, soilage, odors, or pet hair after the Vehicle is returned.” In this situation, $250 was not “reasonable” and the amount of sand not “excessive.” It could have been easily vacuumed up in 15 minutes. My wife reached out to Avis customer service and was first offered a $50 reduction in the charge, which we still considered unreasonable. Sidenote 1: If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, you may want to consider not accepting a $50 credit. Why? Should you later dispute the charge, a credit card company might then rule in the merchant’s favor. Avis surely knows this trick. In any event, the offer was rescinded and my wife got hung up on multiple times by Avis customer service and supervisor when she sought further explanation for this cleaning fee and lack of communication. Still with unanswered questions, I tried my luck with Avis customer service in May and seemed to get somewhere when the agent stated “you are not responsible for the fee and it will be dropped.” The agent stated that he would send this by email for our records. Sidenote 2: Again, if ever in this position, do not disconnect the call until you verify you’ve received such documentation. I made the mistake of taking this agent by his word. Spoiler: the email never came, the charge was never dropped and follow-up calls to Avis have been unproductive with customer service agents denying any such statement. -
I recently went to an airport in North Carolina and rented a car through Avis. I had the pleasure of receiving service from Taniyah Mackey. Her expertise was awesome. She was very knowledgeable about the cars and pointed me in the right direction. Her attitude was top-tier and very pleasant. If I were to ever come back through North Carolina and needed a rental, I would definitely request to speak to her. She deserves acknowledgment for her customer service skills. -
If I could give a 0 star I would. We booked a rental car with Avis, paying online the full amount. We had to pay for an uber from Chapel Hill to get to the branch (we’d already been to two different branches), and when we got here, one hour after our booking started, there were no cars. Shahar, the rental agent informed us that he has no way to contact Avis to ask when the new inventory is due. The rental agents have no way of knowing how many cars they have each day and NO WAY OF CONTACTING CORPORATE MANAGEMENT! How is it possible for a company to be run like this?! Not only do you treat your customers with no respect but also your own employees. This is a disgrace.
When we contacted Customer Service, they told us they can’t even find our booking and when we ask to complain, they just send us to another phone number or around in circles. Again, there is no way for us to sort this out, to cancel the reservation, to complain, or to get any of our money back. This has completely ruined a 4-day vacation.
