Anjappar Chettinad Indian Restaurant
Phone: (919) 294-4597
Anjappar has everything—the menu is thick and filled with all the classics, but it also specializes in South Indian cuisine, which is harder to find. Items like dosa (they have over 20 varieties) and Parotta (Tawa breads) are headliners. The Biryani rice is cooked in curry, and its flavor and spice profile is off the charts. The original Cary location is very popular, and we’re sure the Durham crowd will love it as well.

Wonderful! Food is always so flavorful, the staff is always so helpful, easy to talk to, and welcoming.
The menu changed recently and I’ve enjoyed the changes a lot. They reduced the size a lot. So there is less to pick from but still a wide enough selection that you can try a good variety still.
They also added new Large Plate dishes on the menu that are smaller portions but packed with different kinds of flavors and their beautifully plated, if you’re want to try something different than the standard dishes.
I can’t wait to come back. -
Edit: After a more recent vist knocking down a star cos they have completely gutted their authentic south indian Anjappar menu and whitewashed it for a downtown audience I guess. Food was still decent but the menu is now basically that of any generic Indian restaurant that are dime a dozen. I would say current menu warrants a 3/5 only. No more kothu parotta, veechu parotta, deer sukka etc.
Authentic, top notch South Indian food, probably best in Durham. Limited street parking outside, but we were able to park in the lot near the restaurant which reads reserved for staff but apparently not in the evenings. You gotta use the washroom in the government building right next door which was a tad odd.
1. Deer sukka varuval - 10/10
2. Chicken kothu parotta - 9/10
3. Veechu parotta - 9/10
4. Gunpowder dosa - 9/10
5. Rosemilk - 9/10
6. Virgin mango mojito - 10/10 -
We had a very good experience at Anjappar. Varun was an excellent server. Friendly, attentive, and always checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. His service made our meal even more enjoyable.
The menu has a good variety of options. While some dishes aren’t traditional Indian cuisine, the authentic Indian items we ordered were flavorful and well prepared. I would especially recommend the Veg Manchurian, the Goat Sukka, and the biryanis, all of which were very good.
Overall, the food, service, and atmosphere made for a pleasant dining experience, and I would recommend Anjappar to anyone looking for good Indian food. -
We stopped by for dinner and everything was incredible. The Garlic Naan was perfectly soft and the Butter Chicken was so rich and flavorful. We also tried the Chicken Chettinad, which had an awesome, authentic spicy kick to it.The staff was super helpful in pointing out which dishes were naturally gluten-free or could be made milder.. On top of that, the atmosphere inside is really nice and clean. -
The atmosphere was lovely and there are many nice places to sit to enjoy the windows overlooking the town. We were given plenty of time to look over the menu, and our server made wonderful suggestions. We enjoyed our meal so much, it was delicious and so flavorful. Im happy to have been able to adjust the level of spice in my curry. Plenty of food, it is very much worth the price.
A beautiful spot to enjoy a great meal. Thank you for having us!
