The Nature of Magic and How It Works
In this presentation, Dr. Gerhard Mayer, President of the Parapsychological Association and researcher at the Institut für Grenzgebiete der Psychologie und Psychohygiene (IGPP), discusses findings from a two-phase study exploring the techniques and experiences of contemporary magicians. Unlike stage magicians who perform tricks for entertainment, these practitioners use rituals, intention, and altered states of consciousness in attempts to influence events and outcomes. Their practices may involve mind-matter interaction, extrasensory perceptions, and meaningful coincidences known as synchronicities.
Drawing on interviews with practitioners, Gerhard explores the challenges of evaluating the results of magical practices and how the practitioner’s beliefs, confidence, and motivation may influence their experiences and perceived success. Finally, he discusses whether their knowledge and experience might help researchers design parapsychology studies and better understand the conditions in which unusual effects are reported. Their experience with focused attention and altered states of consciousness may also make them valuable participants in research.
