Exhibit Opening of "Playhouses and Picture Palaces: The Historical Theaters of Downtown Durham,"

Join us at the Museum of Durham History at 6:00 pm for the opening of "Playhouses and Picture Palaces: The Historical Theaters of Downtown Durham," our new exhibit on the theaters of Durham. The exhibit traces the evolution of Durham’s entertainment landscape from its earliest opera houses and playhouses to the elaborate “picture palaces” that emerged during the golden age of cinema. This includes the experiences of Black Durham residents, including the important role theaters in the thriving Hayti community played in providing spaces for Black audiences and performers during the Jim Crow era of segregation. This event is free and open to people of all ages. We will have music by jazz students from North Carolina Central University and free snacks.
