Church that Pauli Murray attended. Though Murray lived within blocks of several churches, she walked the half hour south to attend this Episcopal Church with her aunts who helped found the church. Aunt Sallie married the reverend of the congregation Reverend Small. Murrays grandmother was baptized in the Episcopal church (in Chapel Hill) and two generations later, Pauli Murray would become the first Black Female Episcopalian minister, in 1977. They would later would become a saint in the Episcopal church. -

This lovely community is warm and inviting. Had heard of the church through the Pauli Murray Center , and the church has an icon of St Pauli (and was hosting an ecumenical documentary later that day about Murray’s life and work). If you are unfamiliar with Episcopalian liturgy, one of the friendly parishioners will help guide you through the Book of Common Prayer.
