We just moved to Durham and we love our new congregation! The clergy, administrative staff, board members and congregants are all so bright, talented, open, warm and welcoming. We are so thankful to have found this inspiring community! New members were honored this Shabbat and invited up to the bimah, given a celebratory Oneg and a Shabbat goodie bag! See the attached photo. Thank you Barbara G for the lovely handwritten note and so graciously welcoming us! -
I attended Shabbat Friday night at Judea Reform Congregation services two weeks ago, as an out of town visitor, only to be struck by the hostility from the Bimah, attacking anyone that believes (as I do) that men cannot be women, and women cannot be men. The words of the junior Rabbi were "there is a war on Transgenders." In fact, the war is not on Transgenders, but rather by Transgenders on women and girls, our daughters, wives, sisters and mothers. That weekend, I wrote an email to the Rabbis, and received a hostile response, this time attacking me personally, from the Senior Rabbi. I've been to many Shabbat services at many synagogues, and I've never experienced anything like this. These Rabbis' beliefs are not Torah based, nor rooted in the Talmud or science, yet the captive audience at a family service (i.e. children and their parents) of all places, that were there to pray on Shabbat, was force fed their alternate universe viewpoints. antithetical to Judaism and biology itself. And as I experienced it, Judea Reform is a radical outpost of non-Jewish ideas, marked by hostility towards anyone that has read and believes in the Torah; as in Bereshit (Genesis), it clearly is not a man that created man (Adam) and woman (Eve), but rather, G-d; and thus, for the biological women in our lives, Judea reform is not a place of comfort, sanctity and intellectual (nor biblical) honesty. The biological women of the Torah, including the matriarchs, Sarah, Rebekah, Leah and Rachel, would turn over in their graves if they were forced to sit in silence as the Rabbis of Judea Reform preached non-sense.
Update: Months after posting my review (above) I sent a link to my daughter, who unlike me, has had the benefit of a nursery school to 12th grade Jewish school education. Her response: "In Judaism a Rabbi is supposed to engage you in conversation/sincere argument, not lambast you for your opinions." -
Our family is so grateful to be a part of the JRC. They have a variety of activities for every age, including our four year old. Rabbi Soffer is incredible and committed. We have truly found a community there. They are so organized when producing community events or volunteer opportunities. -
Amazing place with wonderful people. They are in process of getting senior rabbi but you don't feel anything lacking because everyone steps up so beautifully. Great place to raise kids and you feel the importance of family. I've been searching for years for my Jewish family. Growing up I felt at home at synagogue and struggled to find that feeling again...I found it here.
Love the inclusivity of all people. Love how welcoming they are. I love this synagogue and am so grateful to have found it. -
This is a congregation where the warm
embrace of community touches everyone - no matter how old, no matter from where. Simply no matter. Across the life cycle and in all the nooks and crannies in between, there is a divine sense of acceptance, observance, and joy.
