A family member had surgery here and had to spend a few days after before coming home. The facility is very nice and modern, with each building having valet parking at the entrance. (There are also parking garages if you prefer to self park, but for the cost and how far you have to walk, I would recommend valet.)
The nicest thing about the entire Duke Medical conplex is by FAR the staff. It's a huge facility so it's very easy to get turned around. Any time I had to stop to reorrient myself, a staff member would ask if I needed help. Then, they would actually walk me where I needed to go and made it seem like it was an actual pleasure to help. This goes for nurses, orderlies, even janitorial staff would go out of their way to be of assistance. I have never had an experience as pleasant with ANY business, much less a healthcare facility. The warmth and hospitality of every member of the staff that I encountered made a very difficult time infinitely easier, allowing us to focus on family and healing. I can't thank them enough for that.
Hands down the best hospital that I've ever been to. That's not just because the facility is nice and modern and clean, which it is, but because of the outstanding people. -
My mother recently stayed at Duke University Hospital for back surgery. Unfortunately, her experience started off positive but ended very poorly.
After her surgery, the doctor only saw her once, maybe twice, during her entire stay. Communication was extremely lacking. My mother was not informed she was being discharged until the morning of her discharge, which left no time for proper preparation or planning—especially concerning given that she had just undergone back surgery and was still unable to walk properly.
What was most upsetting was the lack of assistance from staff. My mother received no help with bathing or getting dressed, despite her limited mobility and recent surgery. This should never happen to a patient in her condition.
Additionally, the hospital failed to contact the transportation that was arranged. Instead, they sent a hospital security guard to take her home. During the ride, the security guard was on his phone the entire time, which made my mother extremely uncomfortable and upset. This was completely unprofessional and inappropriate for a patient who had just been discharged after major surgery. She asked the doctor to call me and I was never contacted and given updates before I arrived to see my mom.
Overall, my mother was very dissatisfied with the care she received toward the end of her stay. While the beginning of her hospitalization gave us hope, the lack of communication, assistance, and proper discharge planning made this a very disappointing and stressful experience. And they didn't clean the room while my mom stayed there for six days. We expected much better care and professionalism from a hospital with Duke University Hospital’s reputation. -
Recently gave birth here and the experience was pretty bad.. If it wasn’t for my nurse Hannah, it probably would have been alot worse. She was the best nurse I’ve ever had, she truly cared and did everything she could to help me and make me feel comfortable.
The labor and delivery room was great, the doctors, the two women who did my epidural, the doctor who delivered my baby, all great!
Now lets skip to the postpartum room.. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!! Literally a coat closet. The “chair” for my husband to sleep on for 2 days was horrible, my bed that moved by itself every 30 seconds was horrible .. The whole entire room was HORRIBLE. Also, it seemed like the nurses and staff didn’t care about me at all.. No paper towels, toilet paper ect. Only one woman who came in and cleaned up really nice for me and stocked everything.
After just having a baby and being put in a closet I just cried and begged to leave and by the grace of god they let me leave a day early. Honestly ruined the whole experience for myself and my family, very disappointed this being my last baby.. Considering this is Duke hospital, Im even more disappointed.. 100% Disgraceful -
This is got to be one of the best hospitals in the world. From what I seen so far Duke has great staffing, and coordinating with their staff. Now I truly understand why it cost to come to school here. Their nurses are the best of the best. And the security here is pretty good, it could be more tight nipped but I guess they don't want to seem to over- barring. -
Duke University Hospital truly lives up to its reputation for world-class care. From the moment you walk through the doors, it is clear that this is a facility operating at the highest level of medical excellence and professionalism.
**What stood out during the visit:**
* **Exceptional Staff:** Every member of the team, from the administrative staff at check-in to the nurses and specialists, was incredibly professional, attentive, and compassionate. They take the time to listen and explain everything clearly.
* **Coordination of Care:** The level of communication between different departments is impressive. It makes navigating a large, complex medical center much easier and gives you confidence that everyone is on the same page regarding the treatment plan.
* **Top-Tier Facilities:** The hospital is clean, modern, and equipped with the latest technology. Despite how busy they are, the environment feels organized and focused on patient comfort.
* **Clear Communication:** I appreciated how the medical team kept us updated throughout the process, making sure all questions were answered without feeling rushed.
We are fortunate to have access to this level of expertise. Whether it’s for a routine procedure or specialized care, the quality of service here is outstanding. Highly recommended.
