Hispanic & Latino

Durham's Hispanic and Latino community isn't just part of our story; it's shaping where we go next.

The Hispanic and Latino community in Durham has roots originating in 33 countries, each bringing distinct histories, cultures, and traditions that make the Bull City richer, bolder and more itself.

This isn't a recent shift, it's Durham's evolution. As NBC News highlighted in “Tobacco to tortillas,” Durham has embraced its growing Hispanic community. From a growing population of Latino and Latina entrepreneurs and business owners to flourishing restaurants and faith-based gathering places, Durham is cultivating its Hispanic heritage.

Filmmaker Rodridgo Dorfman, a native of Santiago, Chile and proud Durhamite, captures this beautifully in ¡FIESTA! Quinceañera, a six-part digital series illuminating precious and diverse facets of the Hispanic community. His storytelling continues through Nuevo South Magazine and The Center for the Nuevo South, where storytelling is belonging.

Experience it for yourself: Step foot on our turf to hear the drums of Batalá Durham, an Afro-Brazilian drumline. Smell the aroma of handmade churros at Cocoa Cinnamon in Durham’s Lakewood neighborhood. Marvel at the fresh, hot tortillas as they come off the line at La Superior. Snag tickets to the Durham Bulls’ Hispanic Heritage night with players donned in Los Toros (Bull City) jerseys. Discover a destination that has no ethnic majority; where diversity isn't a talking point, it's the point.

We wouldn’t have it any other way.
