Cooking Classes

With so many great chefs, restaurants, and schools here, it's no wonder that Durham has so many one-of-a-kind opportunities to learn how to cook, too! Visitors and residents alike can get hands-on experience with cooking classes and bartending lessons while also having a little fun. Chefs of all skill levels can hone their techniques with classes ranging from global foods to knife skills.

For the Weekend Chef

  • The Durham Spirits Company, located in a historic Durham home and fitted with a commercial kitchen, also offers classes ranging from dim sum to pasta to mixology.
  • Revolution, one of Downtown Durham's fine-dining restaurants, gives diners a chance to try their hand at one of many cooking styles incorporated in the restaurant's menu. Revolution's Chop Shop hosts monthly 14-person, five-hour cooking classes with the head chef.
  • Sur La Table, the cookware store at The Streets at Southpoint, offers almost-daily cooking classes, covering multiple topics and global cuisine.
  • Carnivores will delight in butchery and sausage making classes at Rose's Meat Market and Sweet Shop. Participants will get to take home a variety of meats after these hands-on classes.
  • Pinnacle Culinary Arts Institute offers clinics on topics like Cooking from the Pantry and the Caribbean Fry. Learn about knife skills, culinary sanitation, and then get hands-on experience cooking and pairing wine with your dish.

For the Aspiring Professional Chef

  • The Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham is located in the American Tobacco complex in Durham and trains Durham's newest chefs. Students can receive an associate of applied science in culinary arts, a bachelor of arts in culinary arts management, or earn certificates in the art of cooking or baking and pastry.
  • Durham Technical Community College's continuing education program offers courses in culinary and hospitality training, as well as personal enrichment classes in subjects like cake baking and beer brewing.
  • Pinnacle Culinary Arts Institute offers semester-long programs in culinary sciences and culinary management. Classes are held in n 8,000-square-foot progessional facility in the heart of downtown.

Kids in the Kitchen

  • In addition to offering recreational adult classes, Sur La Table and Pinnacle Culinary Arts Institute frequently offer courses for junior chefs. Young cooks can expand their skills with classes like Sunrise Breakfast or Days in Italy.
  • The Durham Home Fries Cookin Classes are community classes for kids age 9-13 who want to learn to cook with local food. The Home Fries meet monthly during the summer at the Durham Farmers' Market beginning at 9:30 a.m. Classes are led by different local chefs who teach kids how to shop for local ingredients, follow recipes, and perform basic cooking techniques.
