American Hero in Durham seriously exceeded my expectations! The food was amazing — fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I was craving — but what truly made the experience unforgettable was our waiter, Joshua.
Joshua was on another level. From the moment we sat down, he was incredibly welcoming, upbeat, and genuinely kind. He checked on us at the perfect times, made great recommendations, and handled everything with the kind of professionalism and personality you just don’t see often. You can tell he actually cares about the customers, and it made the whole meal feel special. Honestly, Joshua alone is a reason to come back — the guy deserves a raise.
If you’re in Durham, do yourself a favor and stop by American Hero. The food is great, but Joshua’s service makes it a 10/10 experience. I’ll definitely be returning! -

Sandwiches are fantastic. Fresh cut meats, prepared exactly like you want it. I realized today, as I was eating the sub, it's not just the combination of fresh meats, toppings and seasonings that make the sandwich taste awesome. It's the bread too! The bread is always fresh.
Be sure to stop in sometime...

The sandwiches are always great. The meat and cheese are greatly sliced for each sandwich.

UPDATED 30 December 2023: Easily the best sandwich shop in Durham! Meat and cheese is cut fresh for each sandwich. Subs are big, great value for your money.
Staff is super friendly and helpful. I enjoy the conversation each time I go in.

Looking for an awesome sub? You need to visit American Hero Restaurant!
The subs are made with care and fresh ingredients. Meats and cheeses are sliced specifically for your sub, not cut ahead of time and stored. Bread is super fresh and tasty. It wouldn't surprise me if the bread is made daily in store.
I ordered the ham, salami, and cheeses sub today. It was a tough decision because everything sounded so good.
Subs are a good size! I got a "regular" sub and cities only way half of it. That's good because I can't wait to have the leftovers.
This is definitely a family-run business and they care for their customers. Today is the day before father's day - the staff was wishing fathers Happy Father's Day. That was a nice touch.
I can't wait to go back and try more of their delicious food!! -
I stopped in here for lunch Saturday afternoon on the way home. The restaurant is older style but there's lots of space in the floor area and they had several arcade games along the wall that people could play and many of them were old school. It was neat to watch them cut the bread and make my sub and the bread was quite delicious. This is a very simple restaurant, but great for a quick bite to eat and a delicious sandwich. The prices are comparable with Subway, the staff was quick and friendly to deal with and the restaurant seemed fairly clean. Arabic

This place has a friendly staff and great sandwiches. Very similar to Jersey Mike's, if that place was a family own restaurant instead of a franchise. The sandwiches are large enough for the very hungry, coming in two sizes; 8inches and 16 inches. It doesn't hurt that they're delicious as well. Also they have arcade games which is always plus in my book.

Not a bad place, but not my thing.
The people that run it are friendly. Joking and flirting with customers. It's almost like a little sitcom just waiting in line.
I have to give them credit for slicing stuff right as you order it and being pretty fast.
What I didn't like;
only one vegetarian sandwich on the whole menu and it's just cheese. With AMERICAN CHEESE nonetheless. That stuff only belongs on grilled cheese or burgers!
Also, I didn't like that when I said "everything on it" they added in pickles and peppers which they charge extra for but didn't ask or say anything to that effect. So my sub ended up being a little more expensive than what I wanted to spend on lunch. I couldn't exactly ask them to unmake the sub so I bought it. And it was decent enough. Also, this place is not as cheap as it looks. Maybe it's just inflation but I don't like doing $10 for lunch.
Probably a solid spot for meat eaters.
Also got to give them credit for the video games and pool tables. Along with the over the top christian stuff. I'm not a christian myself, but I appreciate when a place has personality, unlike Panera, Subway JJ's etc.
According to the sign, they had a fire and the bible didn't burn, just got a little damaged. (see photos) So they say it was a miracle!
Perhaps they should use miracle whip instead of mayonnaise?
Maybe a good place for families, since they got video games and pool tables.
