Durham's Black-Owned Businesses
From our community, for our community.
Durham has a strong history of diversity and entrepreneurial prowess. Black Wall Street became a moniker for Durham's West Parrish Street, a hub of Black-owned businesses that blossomed during the early 1900s.
What you may not have read in your school textbooks was the thrilling historical narrative of Durham's unapologetic position as successful urban epicenter at the turn of the century. Thriving among the likes of Tulsa, OK and Richmond, VA, Durham's tireless communities of color bolstered the construction of early Durham. Black-owned brick and Black-owned banks rose despite the searing systemic wounds of Jim Crow America.
Today, Durhamites of color are reclaiming history with present-day business ventures. Our community has responded, helping us source Black-owned businesses in Durham to offer support to, now and every single day to come.
What you can find on this page
The listings with photographs below are a list of Black-owned businesses sourced from social media and fellow community members for present and future visitors. Below those are a list of burgeoning entrepreneurial ventures, followed by a link to a robust list of community-based resources for locals. We separated these businesses this way to:
1) allow visitors to find businesses they can frequent while exploring Durham in person;
2) help potential patrons support up and coming businesses online; and,
3) help locals discover businesses to support in everyday life when in need of dental care, childcare, legal assistance, etc.
