St. Joseph’s Historic Foundation (SJHF) is a non-profit organization that manages the Hayti Heritage Center. SJHF is dedicated to preserving Durham's African-American heritage and the impact of the Hayti Heritage Center, a cultural and educational venue that houses a community room, two classrooms, a dance studio, the Lyda Moore Merrick Gallery, administrative and lease offices, and the historic 400-seat performance hall.

The structure was originally St. Joseph's Church, established in 1891 by Edian Markham, a former slave. Masons laid the cornerstone of the site in 1891, and the old church was renovated into a performance hall as part of the cultural arts and arts education center. Stained glass windows and other remnants of the church, which continues to worship in Durham, add to the beauty of this space, which features speakers, artists, and entertainers from around the country and the world. Tours are available year round. Walking tours extend from Parrish Street at the Black Wall Street marker to the Carolina Times newspaper, and other tours at Hayti are facilitated by our Board historian. Contact info@hayti.org or 919-683-1709 to schedule a tour.
