(A)Spire is an ambitious new commission that reimagines how movement can reflect the entrepreneurial energy and creative drive shaping Durham’s past and future. Conceived by acclaimed choreographer and site artist Stephan Koplowitz, this site-specific work transforms the Mutual Tower—a landmark of Black enterprise and a living monument to innovation—into both stage and subject. ADF students form the core of the performing ensemble, joined by Durham community dancers with original music by composer Andy Hasenpflug and costume design by Melody Eggen. The project also grew out of Koplowitz’s collaboration with Provident1898, the coworking community in the building that honors Durham’s legacy of Black entrepreneurship and helped inspire the work’s vision. Provident1898 will host the first part of the performance and serves as an essential artistic catalyst for the piece. Rather than recounting history, (A)Spire channels the spirit of enterprise: striving, dreaming, and collective endeavor. Through immersive visual, musical, and choreographed journeys, audiences experience the architecture as a metaphor for aspiration and elevation.
