Memorial Day Heron Rookery Walks

Every spring, minutes from downtown Durham, a giant colony of great blue herons and great egrets nest adjacent to Ellerbee Creek. This rookery is one of the few known nesting sites of great egrets in the entire Piedmont, and this is the time of year that these birds gather to raise their young.

Tours will leave from the Gazebo.

Please arrive 10 minutes before your tour's start time as the tour guides will depart after a brief introduction.
You will see ECWA Event Parking signs in front of the area to park. Parking is allowed anywhere in the Glenstone subdevelopment.
Be sure to wear proper footwear and clothing as the one-mile trail is a bit muddy and you could come in contact with ticks or poison ivy.
There are no bathrooms or water fountains on site.
Please bring binoculars if you have them.
