Virtual 156th Anniversary Surrender Event
Because of the continued restrictions related to the virus, the annual surrender event will take place virtually. Bennet Place has lined up some great speakers to help you better understand the final year of a war that tore our country apart for four bloody years. They will begin with the last and largest battle fought between General Sherman and General Johnston at Bentonville with historian, Colby Stevens. You'll then follow along as the armies move westward where a clash between the two armies took place in Morrisville with historian Ernie Dollar from the Museum of Raleigh. You'll learn about the role of the US Colored troops with historian Earl Ijames from the Museum of History and the final surrender of General Johnston's army at Bennett Place with historian Ryan Reed. The final chapter of this drama is how the end of the Civil War impacted the enslaved population with the event we now celebrate called Juneteenth with historian Vera Ceselski from Stagville.
