What are lichens and why should we care? Join Scott LaGreca of the Triangle Mycology Society and Manager of the Paul J. Kramer Plant Collection at Sarah P. Duke Gardens, for a broad overview of the Kingdom Fungi, followed by a deep dive into lichen biology. Explore fascinating facts and stories about the lichens of North Carolina—a biologically fascinating part of the world that is home to two lichen biodiversity hotspots! There will be a variety of lichen specimens on display!
Scott LaGreca received his PhD in Botany from Duke University, where he was a student of the famous lichenological duo Bill and Chicita Culberson. He has worked in four major herbaria and has published over 50 research articles on lichens and other fungi. Scott is currently the Paul J. Kramer Plant Collections Manager at Sarah P. Duke Gardens. He is the Vice-President of the Triangle Mycological Society.
The mission of the Triangle Mycological Society (TMS) is to foster community in the Triangle-Piedmont region through a shared appreciation for fungi. We host guided forays as well as presentations on all aspects of mycology, including mushroom identification, home cultivation, sustainable foraging, and scientific research. We aim to promote citizen science, academic discovery, and conservation of fungi and welcome members of all identities and skill levels.

Parking is available in the library parking lot or at the North Queen Street Garage (115 North Queen Street) located directly across from the library behind the apartments under construction.
