The Artful Botanist

Both art and botany begin with observation, and sketching a plant builds awareness of its details. Drawing also changes your brain and has many benefits. It helps your brain develop additional pathways for improved memory, creativity and intuition while also increasing feel-good chemicals such as serotonin, endorphins and dopamine. As with any other activity, sketching improves with practice. Join Eli Feldman, Ruth Mary Meyer Japanese Garden Horticulturist in the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum at Duke Gardens, for this in-person class to walk through the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum, exploring the flora of this part of Duke Gardens. Then move indoors to draw from plant samples as you practice observation and drawing technique with guidance from Eli. Meet in the classroom inside the Doris Duke Center.
