Shirlette Ammons at Stanczyks
Shirlette Ammons is a Black queer Southern artist, Emmy and Peabody Award-winning TV producer, poet, and musician from Beautancus, North Carolina. Long navigating being “othered,” she confronts spectacle and agency on her acclaimed album Spectacles, co-produced with Phil Cook and named one of the year’s best by Sound Opinions. The 11-track project explores objectification and performance while highlighting her work as songwriter, MC, bassist, and producer alongside a wide creative community. Ammons has also produced major PBS series and documentaries, is a Pitch Black Prize recipient, and a Cave Canem Fellow with two poetry collections.
