Reel Fun! Exploring Our Local Underwater Critters!

Join North Carolina Conservation Biologist Mike Walter for an evening of aquatic fun as he explores the wet wildlife right in our backyards. Mike will showcase scenes from the unseen, sharing the colorful and exciting world of fish, freshwater mussels, and crayfish in Eno River State Park and Duke Forest as well as some of the research projects currently underway to conserve these treasures of our streams!

Mike Walter grew up in Chapel Hill and has been hiking, biking and playing outside in the Triangle for nearly 30 years. He started with the Wildlife Resources Commission as a technician in 2016 before attending Graduate school at NCSU where he earned his Master’s degree in Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology studying the microbiomes of in-vitro propagated freshwater mussels. Following Graduate school, Mike returned to the WRC as a Conservation Biologist, working to conserve imperiled freshwater mussels, non-game fish, and crayfish in the Neuse, Tar, Roanoke, and Chowan River basins in North Carolina.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission served both the citizens and wildlife of North Carolina since 1947. The Inland Fisheries Division of the WRC manages our aquatic resources ensuring ample angling opportunities for the public and the conservation of non-game aquatic wildlife.
