Opening of Loteria: A Photographic Study of Latino Contributions to Our Community

Join in for the free, family-friendly opening celebration of the exhibit “Loteria: A Photographic Study of Latino Contributions to Our Community.” Featuring the work of local photographer, Anthony Garza, the exhibit brings dynamic portraits of members of our community into the visual world of lotería, an iconic game played throughout most of Latin America and the Caribbean. Through the portraits and accompanying profiles of the people featured in Garza’s work, from carpenters, lawyers, doctors, homemakers, authors, and rock stars, exhibit participants can explore the many ways that these community member’s complex histories and Latino identities bring richness, joy and deep commitment to our lives and our state.

The opening event will be a true celebration, with models exhibiting the fashion from Descalza Designs, the color and tradition of the Takira Folclor Colombian dance troupe, photo opportunities with characters from the lotería cards and Latin music and snacks. All are welcome to come learn and celebrate the joy of lotería and the many rich and varied contributions of the Latino members of our community.

The exhibit will be on display and open to the public September 6 – October 5, 2025 at the Durham Art Guild Golden Belt Gallery (Suite 9-157A, 800 Taylor St. Durham, NC, 27701). The gallery is open from 10:00am-7:00pm Monday-Saturday and 12:00-6:00pm Sundays.
