Maplewood Cemetery Tour
Celebrate Durham history with a guided tour of Durham’s famous Old Maplewood Cemetery. Newly designated on the National Register of Historic Places, Maplewood was created in the early 1870s as Durham’s very first public amenity. The cemetery is Durham’s very first public space and its very first planned space. It is a garden of memories and our oldest repository of public art. In Maplewood are buried captains of industry, famous educators, great philanthropists, and ordinary people. In the cemetery are reposed the origins of many Durham legends and icons. Enjoy the peace and solemnity of one of the city’s great historic treasures.
Tickets are good for the entire day, Saturday, October 19, from 9:30am-4:30pm. Preservation Durham Tour Guides will be leading concurrent loops through different areas of the cemetery that you can hop on or off at any time. You can join at any time throughout the day and stay as long as you like. Each loop is about 75 minutes from start to finish and they usually have three loops going at once.
You can leave and come back with your ticket. Details regarding each loop and meeting place will be sent out the week before in your confirmation email. The tour may be canceled (with refunds provided) in instances of severe weather. Attendees must be able and comfortable walking on sometimes unstable ground. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please reach out ahead of time and they will do their best to accommodate your concerns.
