About the Film
HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY is an urgent and deeply moving documentary directed by Sam Feder. The film follows ACLU attorney Chase Strangio, the first openly transgender person to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, as he challenges Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth (United States v. Skrmetti).
Beyond the courtroom battle, HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY examines how mainstream media can distort public perception, amplify anti-trans rhetoric, and fuel policies that harm trans lives. Journalists and activists including Jelani Cobb, Lydia Polgreen, Gina Chua, and Laverne Cox offer insight into how disinformation drives both legislation and prejudice.
Filmed over many months, it captures not only the legal strategy but also the personal vulnerability and strength of those fighting for bodily autonomy.
With its stakes rooted in both law and democracy, the film is a clarion call to action.
