Durham Literacy Center 40th Anniversary Gala

The Durham Literacy Center will celebrate four decades of transformative impact through adult literacy and education with its 40th Anniversary Gala. The event will feature live entertainment by musician Al Strong and will also pay tribute to DLC founder Mary Whaley Paul.

Since 1985, the Durham Literacy Center has assisted nearly 20,000 adults and out-of-school youth in improving their reading, writing, English, digital literacy, and high school equivalency skills. The 40th Anniversary Gala will celebrate the organization's rich history and highlight those whose lives have been transformed through access to education.

“We are incredibly proud to celebrate 40 years of empowering individuals through literacy,” said Crystal Avent, Executive Director of the Durham Literacy Center. “This milestone is a tribute to the thousands of students, volunteers, staff, and partners who have made our mission possible. We look forward to celebrating together and reaffirming our commitment to a more equitable and literate Durham.”

The evening will showcase inspiring student testimonials, reflect on the DLC’s history, recognize key partners and volunteers, and offer opportunities to support DLC’s future through a silent auction and donation pledges. Funds raised will support the free, learner-centered programs that help more than 500 adults each year.

Amid Durham’s exciting growth and change, the DLC remains the leading independent adult literacy provider in Durham County, the only community-based organization focused entirely on adult literacy.
