"Behind the Mask" by Cornell Watson - Visual art exhibit at the Durham Arts Council!
DAC is excited to announce that their first in-person exhibit since March will be opening to the public by appointment only on September 15. Held in conjunction with Click! Photography Festival, “Behind The Mask” is a powerful collection of portraiture photography exploring Black existence and individuality. It is a moving and visceral tribute to those who have had to make constant, micro adjustments away from the state of their true selves in order to create their “mask” and be accepted by white America. Through his images Cornell Angelo Watson Jr. asks the viewer pointed questions about what these adjustments have done to the people behind the masks, and honors and their resounding and resilient dignity.
Cornell is an artist based in Durham, NC. His photography was featured in DAC’s “Portraits of Durham” exhibit, and has also appeared in Blk Crwn Magazine. He is currently a contributing photographer for Durham Magazine.
