ADF presents Alexander Davis: Gay Aesthetics
Program: Gay Aesthetics: Based on a True Story
Running time: 60 minutes, no intermission
“This all started because I auditioned for this choreographer…”
Gay Aesthetics: Based on a True Story is an evening-length dance solo/play/kiki that excavates the history of queer aesthetics, representation in media, survival tools, and reality television. Armed with only a marginal understanding of PowerPoint, a pulsing hyperpop score composed and performed live by the show’s coerced assistant, Tyler Catanella, Alex embarks on an earnest exploration of embodied and authentic queer existence as he grapples with physical expectations, belonging, and isolation, as well as demonstrating the exact wrong way to bring poppers through TSA. Is all of this academic language trying to overcompensate for something? Potentially. While Alex wrestles with the material and holds space as a solo performer, you’ll be served a smorgasbord of insecurities.
