I'm an admirer of the fragrant David Austins, but I'm never forward-thinking enough to pre-order. I came in in Spring, chatted with Emily Bronson about this, noticed that this year every Austin they had was either reserved or came in damaged in shipping. So I bought a lot of nice healthy floribundas, and left. Then came back a few times over the next few weeks, because I really love it on the Witherspoon grounds when everything is blooming, and the staff are friendly and don't mind you walking around and sniffing. And on those occasions, Emily gave me *not one*, but *TWO* David Austins (both skillfully restored to good health after shipping damage) *for free*. Free, because they had minor root-level defects that didn't affect their performance or appearance at all. Most places would totally have charged me for them, and I'd happily have paid, but she gave them to me *for free*. And they were a TAMORA and a GERTRUDE JEKYLL, each fully deserving of the capital letters - two of Austin's best creations, in my eyes. I am *super* chuffed, and will forever get a nice warm feeling when I look at those two plants. I hope you give Emily a raise - she knows how to cultivate long-term loyal customers who will spread the good word about Witherspoon. :)
Kristin (Christen? Sorry...) the horticulturalist is extremely knowledgeable and will spend a good amount of time answering questions. Her advice helped me bring back a container-based Angel Face that I mis-pruned early in the year. It's doing gorgeously now - no dieback, lots of nice new shoots and flowerbuds.
Every bush I've bought so far has been doing ridiculously well, despite the fact that I only have a postage-stamp-sized balcony with rather limited sun. I have Angel Face (has been with me for 18 months now, still blooming fine in original container!), Intrigue, Violet's Pride, Julia Child, White Licorice, Scentimental, Purple Tiger, Mr. Lincoln (a risk, but he's doing well), Tamora, Hot Cocoa, and Gertrude Jekyll. Aphid control takes a little effort, but apart from that they're all blooming nicely - on some days I can literally barely move for flowers.
For uncertain prospective customers: If you're a balcony gardener like me and really want a rosebush, then go ahead and get a rosebush. Unless you have truly poor light, it should be fine. Angel Face is a good, relatively shade-tolerant one to start with. :)
Thanks for the beautiful roses in my life, Witherspoon. :)

Amazing roses! Healthies plants I have ever seen! The Roses that I purchased were climbing new dawn, climbing pearly gates, first prize, and crimson. They all bloomed profusely with in weeks. I threw in some compost then four weeks later started monthly fertilizer and they are still amazing and growing fast. I have purchased Rose's from other companies in the past but now I will forever get my Rose's from Witherspoon.
