Mighty fine pulled pork! Carolina style; no smothering sauces needed. If you order sweet potato puree for a side, you've got dessert! Pricey but worth it!

March 2019 - do yourself a favor and try out the Brisket with the sauce on the side! It’s great and practically melts in your mouth. I tried the Mac N cheese again and I just don’t care for it. I Usually come here a few times a year. Usually the Pulled pork is fantastic, but it wasn’t the other day. Almost felt like it was 1 day away from being thrown out. Starting to turn to Pork Jerky. Best Hush Puppies in North Carolina! Slaw is always very good! Today I opted for the Mac n Cheese today and was very disappointed. Never again will I get it again. Picnic is a great place to eat and I will be back!

Extraordinary flavors. Combining the best of eastern North Carolina BBQ. With Western North Carolina. Excellent BBQ. Fabulous service. My husband says you have to get the brisket cheese fries, and the vegetables are outstanding.

This is one of our favorite local spots in Durham! They have the best BBQ and if you enjoy local spirits, they have those as well. They have a Sunday brunch menu. The staff will get to know you as a regular... they are great!

Good BBQ pork (but mushy texture... I like some crust); better fried chicken. The 'hush puppies' were a thick batter poured into hot oil: short, greasy cylinders, not balls. The slaw was OK, the collards good, the fried okra was great, the string beans we're mushy (presumably traditional, but not my style). Overall I liked Al's or Brew & 'Cue better.

First time eating here. Hardly any parking, we came around 2 pm. One one waitress was on duty for inside seating. Took forever to get anything to drink and I had to get up and get my own drink refill after glass sat empty for 20 minutes. My husband and I split the brisket platter. Brisket had a lot of fat marbled in it, so half went to waste. Sweet potato casserole was excellent and so were the hush puppies. Seemed very over priced to us for the amount of food you get.

Really good pulled pork plate. You won't leave hungry. Pork was very well trimmed and had a good, but not overpowering, smokey flavor. They have their own barbecue sauce which they say is a mix between "eastern" and "western", but is more "eastern" than "western" (more vinegar-based) - fine by me...I like "eastern" better. Sauce is nice and spicy. Full service bar stocked with quality spirits.

Fried buttermilk chicken breast was juicy, tender & tastey. Great crispness & hot when served. The sauces, brines, dressing I've discovered a bit tart for my personal taste. There exists a balance of sweet & tart flavor in most dishes of this category. A dozen visits in past 3 years. Not my last.

If you’re lucky enough to grab a seat at Picnic, you better get ready for their food! My mouth waters right when I step in the door. The food is cooked to perfection and the desserts are always a great treat! Even if you come here just to grab a drink from the bar, it’ll be delicious. You’re always greeted with a smile and friendly attitude. Definitely recommend stopping here if you’re in the area!

Went last night as I’ve been looking forward to trying this place...and especially looking forward to the fried chicken. Got the buttermilk friend chicken, greens, and Mac and cheese. Across the board everything was just okay. And across the board relatively bland. Chicken Hut still reigns supreme for fried chicken in Durham.

Hit or miss. I've had some great meals there, but I've had a few bad ones. Steer clear of the shrimp, and I might go so far as to be suspect of any seafood. The pork is fantastic, and the chicken isn't bad either.

Our group of 8 was able to walk right in and sit right down. Immediately annoyed by a table that rocked back and forth due to an issue with the feet. Staff knew about it too as evidenced by the collection of coasters they tried to jam under there in a failed attempt to prevent the table from rocking (fix it dear Henry! Fix it!). Good beer selection. Daily specials and desserts listed on chalkboard all looked good. Fried oysters were good but the breading was lacking something special. Fried green tomato BLT was nice. BBQ sandwiches were done right (a slight smoke flavor, nicely chopped, hardly any fat). I didn’t get the fried chicken but I wish I did because that dish looked marvelous! Lots of outdoor seating on the front porch. Clean dining room. Beware the rocking table!

Come here often and get takeout. BBQ is on point. Good local beer, full bar, great wait staff. Rotating daily specials and they always offer some kind of fish dish for non-meat eaters (or if you just love fish).

Made a stop before a Duke game and was extremely happy to have found it. The brisket sandwich was delicious and the homemade cukes and pickled red onion were the perfect touch. The mac and cheese was perfectly cheesy. I'd definitely go back!

Good food, although nothing was truly spectacular. The meat was tender, the sauce was tangy, and the sides were interesting. The service was good. The desserts were very good. Prices are high at $16 a plate and there was no family style (shared meats and sides) options. For 6 adults and 2 children (only eating sides), we paid $150 before tip. I wanted to love it. But the next time I'm in north Carolina, I'll try another BBQ

If you're looking for a great place to go out with some friends and family or maybe a low-key date night, then I would highly consider Picnic! With incredibly delicious BBQ, some incredible country sides, and the best hush puppies that you'll ever eat! This is the perfect place. I will say however it is a bit pricey but it is 1000% worth it!

Service and food was great! Only real complaint is how fast the food arrived. Food came out after being served appetizer in literal minutes. Kind of shorten the night and atmosphere. Food was excellent though!!

Picnic is a co sistently good spot for Eastern Carolina pulled pork. Usually moist and just enough of a "Tang" from vinegar. They serve a minced coleslaw that balances the pork well. The real star of the menu are the sides, these are better than most you can find elsewhere. Baked beans, fried okra,

I need people to understand just how amazing this place is. If you want the best the state has to offer in the way of pulled pork bbq, you really do have a lot of options. However, some shops have really set themselves apart from the rest. Picnic is definitely one of those places. The moment you walk in your senses are embraced by the smoky aroma that only a whole hog can provide. The staff are super helpful and friendly and the food is next level. This might be the only reason for anyone to ever go to Durham. Full stop.

Picnic is a consistently good spot for Eastern Carolina pulled pork. Usually moist and just enough of a "Tang" from vinegar to please fans of "eastern" NC BBQ. Picnic serves a minced coleslaw that balances with the pork well. The real star of the menu are the sides, these are better than most you can find elsewhere. Baked beans, fried okra, potato salad and many others are available. Its a lot of fun exploring them If you're in the neighborhood, give Picnic a try, they are good!

I’ve been wanting to check out this place for awhile and it did not disappoint. The host and server were very nice and hospitable. I can’t claim I’ve checked out an abundance of different BBQ places in NC, but as of currently, this place has the best flavor I’ve had yet. The pulled pork sandwich was pretty standard, but their home made sauce was great, the brisket fries were out of this world and the fried oysters were great as well. Highly recommend checking this place out!

First time visiting for lunch and the pork sandwich was excellent! Saw another person enjoying a half slab of ribs and wow did they look amazing! Next time that's what I'm going to have! The service was very fast too.

Picnic has its own pig farm for crying out loud. Their own farm! Sauces are phenomenal, and they don't drown their collards in sugar water like some other places around here. I'm not a fan of their style of hush puppies, but who cares when the ribs are this good.

The Picnic of Durham....The food is always consistent and great customer service. There last Durham Health Rating (food safety) was a 91.5 and needs improving. Noticed a number of repeat violations. We ordered the fried green tomato BLT...Family thought it was okay. The ribs were okay. The pork BBQ and brisket were okay. My son loves their fried chicken sandwich. The fried okra and green beans were amazing. The cole slaw was tasty. The potato salad was average. Despite what we thought....Our puppy dog tried several samples and gave them all five stars!

Probably the restaurant we eat the most from in Durham. Love the que and all the sides. Lol at the woman dropping her son off at college and probably paying 50k a year for a Bachelor of Arts but getting offended at having to leave a tip tho!!

On a recent trip to Durham, NC we went to Picnic for lunch. It was during COVID, so there was only outside seating and it was limited. We must have gotten there at the perfect time, because we were able to get a seat. I will admit it was quite warm, but the yummy food made it perfect. Due to COVID, they have moved the order area outside. The young lady that took our order was not really friendly and she did not know how to accept a gift card for payment. So ordering was a little rocky. Being a Southern Girl, I had to try the pimento cheese with the fried saltines. What a treat. The pimento cheese was smooth and well-balanced. I thought the idea of frying the saltines was quite clever, it really added a little extra yummy. I had the pulled pork sandwich with french fries. Oh my goodness, the bun was warm and so soft, it seemed to melt right on the pulled pork as I took a bite. I loved it. The pork was nice and tender. Jenni had the brisket. She said it was tender also. We both loved the fries!! I did not enjoy the bottled sweet tea, but I am guessing they had that due to COVID. When I visit Durham again, Picnic is on my list to eat at again.

Picnic furnished our delicious Christmas Day brunch: a Sausage Breakfast Casserole and Cinnamon Rolls with Orange Glaze. We added the fruit and table setting at home. If there’s a similar menu for New Year’s Day — to pre-order — we recommend it highly. (The precise packaging and clear cooking instructions were perfect!)

Absolutely love picnic! Their BBQ is phenomenal and their brisket is out of this world. Their meat is fresh right from the farmers market. You can’t go wrong with the main and 2 sides. The staff is super friendly and accommodating and the beer selection is great!

Awesome fried chicken. Batter was really thin and not seasoned too heavy. I was really surprised by how moist the chicken breast was despite its thin batter - honestly better than most rotisserie chicken. The chili sauce on the side also went really well with the chicken. Definitely recommend if you want to enjoy fried chicken without feeling guilty.

The smoky aroma lofting from this restaurant is irresistible! They are known for their barbecue, fried chicken, and catfish. I went the traditional route and ordered their Barbeque Boat which has their classic trio of pulled pork, coleslaw, and hushpuppies. My favorite was actually the coleslaw with the finely grated cabbage and hint of chives and creamy sauce that complemented well with the vinegar-based sauce and smokiness of the pork. Definitely one of the best coleslaw I have ever had! The indoor area is currently off limits, but the outdoor patio is open seating. Aside from their menu, they also have some cool swag such as hats and shirts for purchase as well. Lastly, they have an automatic service charge of 20% so that is taken care of.

Picnic is a bit on the pricey side (yet competitive) for cuisine that has been served for hundreds of years and all over the triangle. They don’t reinvent the wheel, but they keep the wheel well-oiled. The food is consistently good and the menu has enough options to make it a challenge to decide, but not so many that you give up and order the special. The ribs are tender with just enough fat to coat the palate and then it’s calmed with a tangy sauce with a little heat on the finish. They’re definitely worth trying once - I have ordered them several times. The fried chicken is light and crunchy - mostly it is moist. Not in the greasy way, but in the juicy way. The sides are simple and not confused with curry or Thai chili peppers. They’re just tasty. For dessert, the chess pie is indulgent yet not too filling. I highly recommend giving Picnic a shot. You’ll come back for more.

Great food. They use lots of locally sourced ingredients. The barbecue is top notch, collards are good, and the scratch-made baked beans are delicious. Take out only for now, but you can also get several good beers to take home.
