I absolutely LOVED the Pauli Murray Ancestors tour of West End that included dramatizations of her family and context. Getting to know the people who came before Pauli and witnessing their bravery was impactful. The center is beautifully curated and I am happy I was able to visit during Pauli’s birth month- I plan to attend other events through the center. This place is a gem and every Durham resident should take the tour in memory and celebration of the Black folks that built this city. Tours don’t happen as much—so follow the center for dates! -
This visit was very impactful, uplifting and time well spent. I am so glad we booked tickets for a Wednesday morning guided tour. Well researched and passionate experts on Pauli Murray will lead you through Pauli's childhood home while walking you through the story of Pauli's personal life and career using historical photos, quotes, and highlighting key moments. The guided tour is well paced, has a sense of flow, and you have the opportunity to ask questions after each room.
I came in with a fair amount of background knowledge (previously read one of Pauli's books and watched the documentary) and I still learned so much. This historic site is important, needs to be preserved, and should be visited by anyone who has the opportunity. -
We arrived early in the morning when the center was closed, but we were inspired by the history depicted on the signs on the front lawn. Definitely worth taking the time to learn about this amazing woman. -
I loved this guided tour and getting to learn about Pauli Murray. Kristin and Clarissa created such an interactive environment with opportunities to ask questions about Pauli’s life, their home, and their family (found and blood). When things I read in the exhibit made me curious, Kristin and Clarissa responded with enthusiasm and engaged in such rich conversations with myself and my friend. I came into this not knowing much about Pauli and left feeling moved by the endless roles they held throughout their life (poet, writer, scholar, priest) and the way queerness/transness and their faith coexisted. Overall, the pacing was great and I would recommend a guided tour to anyone but especially to movement folks! -
The Center is incredibly dedicated to not just educating about Pauli Murray but also with continuing their legacy and uplifting the community via outreach and programming.
