Used to be 5 stars, but most areas are inaccessible due to unsafe soil. If you are ok just staying on the pavement and walking around, it's still enjoyable.

I hope the city of Durham finds a way to remove the affected soil and restore Northgate to its fully open status.

Cool Playground for kids! Very modern playground equipment! Different ways of climbing on stuff compared to a “normal” playground. Lots of rope features to climb on, kinda layed out somewhere “obstacle course-like.” Most of the playground is not really made for ages 2.5 and under but, they have also a secondary playground at the park for the wee little tykes. This park has tons of open empty grassy area, a creek/stream that runs through the middle of the grounds, and a cool bridge that crosses over top of it. This park has HUGE trees in it too!

Nice little retreat tucked away in North Durham. The waters of Ellerbe Creek are crystal clear with fish visible swimming just below the surface. Very large, stately Loblolly Pines and Southern Red Oaks line the trails and provide shade.

Majority of the grassy area are blocked off. Signs indicate that there is some type of soil contamination. It’s a shame to let this older park deteriorate.

Parents and travelers, please be warned: Large sections of Northgate Park are closed due to toxic lead levels in the soil. On our trip across the state we stopped here for a picnic lunch and playground. We unknowingly entered a fenced-in grassy area because there was zero signage explaining the health hazard. Our children played in the grass and with lots of sticks before a local passerby warned us of the contamination, we just thought the playground was under construction as it was separately fenced off.

The city has known about this since 2023 (arguably, 2022), yet the "security" is just orange mesh that is broken and easy to bypass, with no clear warnings about why it's there.
