The food is great, the people are great, the staffing is horrendous. We waited one hour before we got any service or appetizers and then it was almost another hour before we got our actual meal as we were waiting for a chef to become available. The restaurant was not at all busy so possibly just routinely understaffed. Once we Got service and food it was very tasty but sadly waiting two hours for food is just unacceptable. Hopefully they change management because our server and chef were great

Good sushi, decent hibachi grill. The wait can be long in spite of having empty tables. Plus, it's not at all inexpensive. Not a lot of bang for the buck. That said, if you are lucky and get a good chef, it can be very entertaining but that is far from guaranteed. Most chefs are in robo mode, going through the checklist of motions. It's been a long time since I saw an actual Japanese chef there.

Best Hibachi Not only is the food phenomenal, the entertainment by the chefs is unmatched. Even a quiet lunch was turned into a VIP Show. My son was already getting a nice treat, but the fact that the cheif (I wish I remembered his name) was beyond personal to my son, and even the wait staff, catered to him. It was an incredible experience. My wife and I have on many occasions eaten here alone, for dinner or lunch, and we are always impressed by the food and service.

Best Japanese Steakhouse I've ever been to. Beautiful decor. Hibachi Shrimp was tender and very flavorful. Hibachi Chicken was also good. Soup was the best I've had. Portion sizes were large and a to go box was needed. Our chef was entertaining and engaging. Would definitely eat here again if in the area.

Wanted to give two stars to lower their overall score to something more accurate but it wasn’t really that bad. But this is one of the more expensive Hibachi places my family has been too and definitely the least impressive. We got what appeared to be the least personable chef and his food was also lacking in flavor. The restaurants cleanliness gets 3 stars and the chefs performance gets 3 stars and the taste of the food get 3 stars. Take this and add that it was 20-30$ more then our favorite place back home and this place was just lack luster all around.

Everything came out as ordered. Service was fast and friendly. I had the crunchy roll, deep sea roll, and krazy train roll. Restaurant was clean, bathroom was clean, food looked fantastic. The only downside that I can really think of is that if you enter into there restaurant, you're going to come out smelling like food. But that's what you sign up for when you are going to a hibachi restaurant.

Delicious food and great service. I highly recommend the tofu noodles for a delicious vegetarian option. Tables seat 9 and they put different groups together. Our server Layla and our chef Fayas both seemed to like their jobs. The tropical fish tank is really interesting and cool to look at.

Sushi was excellent and fresh. The chef was thoroughly entertaining. Extremely clean restaurant. Waiter needed a little more training, but decent overall.

Wonderful place. Food was wonderful. The staff was great especially a waitress named Layla. My son threw up at the table from over eating and she helped my wife clean up my son in the bathroom despite the huge mess he made. She was very nice and sweet. Thank you.

Went to Durham on a Saturday, right at opening which I suggest; with two other couples. Food was great and Fayayas the Chef skillful & entertaining. Order the Soup as the salad is iceberg not Romaine. If you order a lunch entree before 2PM, your cost will be as low as $10. Very reasonable for a "fire cooked meal" right in front of you. Efficient waiter and huge fish tank in lobby.

A fine place for hibachi. The food is as expected, and the atmosphere as well. Unfortunately depending on how you are seated the dinner can occasionally take too long or too short of a time. Also you will leave with all of your clothes and hair smelling like Habachi grills.

Excellent food!! Staff was courteous and friendly. Yvon was an excellent chef and very engaging...Even fulfilled my son's request of "more flames". Thank you for the great experience!!

Sushi is EXCELLENT! As good as you'll find ANYWHERE! The atmosphere is not as nice as it used to be, but the FOOD! Still YUMMY!!

Amazing surprise really close to the motorway. The chef was entertaining and put on a show that I'll remember for a long time. We were sitting with people we didn't know, and yet we started talking to each other thanks to the amazing atmosphere the staff created. I would definitely recommend to have the combination of all the meats as a first experience. The food is abundant and delicious, plus it is cooked in front of you! The sushi rolls were tasty and big. The recipes whilst not exclusively traditional, have a definite flavour to them and so much character. The perfect place for a family gathering or to impress people for your birthday!

Food was good. I also got three lamb chops. One out of the three could have been more tender. Upon coming in I asked the host for a regular table. He walked off and went to the dining area. I didn't know if I was supposed to follow him or not. He turned around and we were still waiting at the host stand. He motioned for us to come over. I told him since you didn't say anything I didn't know. I asked our waitress for napkins and the second time she came to the table I reminded her. Her response was "yep". I didn't like the manners. Either person could use some help in the manners department

We typically like Kanki, but everything was off tonight. We usually sit on the sushi side, and did so tonight. The third person in our group didn't get their food until nearly everyone was done eating. Well over 45 minutes. Also I ordered something that was on the menu, the whole reason for going tonight, only to be told they didn't have it. :/ Everyone strikes out occasionally, so three stars for tonight

Entertaining and yummy savory hibachi! Rice and steak we're big hits for my picky kids. Shrimp, mushrooms and veggies were also really solid. Chicken was fine but not as awesome as the cow. Beer selection is meh.

Good all around food. Bartender was excellent! We arrived at 4:30. Did not appear to be busy. It was 5:30 before we were seated, then another 30 before we order and 30 more minutes before food was first served. Enough said.

We chose to seat in the sushi area since it was no waiting. The hostess asked how many and walked off without saying anything, then goes to a table and motions for us to come over. The table and chairs/booth were SOOOOO sticky that I couldn’t even slide in the seat. We ordered appetizers which came out after the soup and salad. And as soon as our waitress brought the appetizers she returned with main course. So we had to hurry and eat the appetizers so that our main course wouldn’t get cold. Our waitress Gabby was not friendly at all. Once we barely started eating she asked if we wanted dessert or boxes, when she could clearly see we were still eating I felt like we were being rushed to leave. The food was good and it was a nice portion size.

Experience was amazing. Loved the waiting room and only had a 5 minute wait time. Food was superb so was the service. Definitely would recommend if you have an affinity for Japanese cuisine.

Kanki is an amazing hibachi style restaurant! My family used to go all the time in my youth... And before I moved away... This trip was actually my first time back in nearly 20yrs. I am going to have to make it an advisor occurrence from now on!

It was ok. Been to Japan and this has little to do with authentic Japanese food. It was tasty USA version. Didn't get into the show area but what we saw was a lot of rice being manipulated. I hope no packet ingredients used but some was a little suspicious. Good service and fairly quick.

Awesome meal and excellent service! Kanki has been making great food for decades and this time was no different. The lamp chops app was amazing and wonderfully tender. The Walking Dead sushi roll was a delectable assortment of fantastic flavors that dazzled our tastebuds. Our hibachi chicken was made even better by the drizzling of the ginger sauce on top. And the bananas and ice cream dessert tantalized us with flavors even more. A wonderful experience.

Awesome dining experience. Kanki brings people together. Previously strangers and normally insulated in closely limited networks of people and media, now we have asked to be placed with one another around an somewhat exotic and fun eating experience. We need more environments like Kanki that bring people together!

Usually this place is on point and amazing! This time, less so. We placed a to-go order, and asked for no onion. When we got our order we noticed onions so we took it back (still no biggie accidents happen). The woman the handled the complaint seemed super unconcerned, 10 minutes later I had my order back. Then I noticed that most, but not all the onions were gone. This makes me think they attempted to pick them out. Not very excited about eating this now.

It was absolutely wonderful! The food was delicious & everyone was extremely friendly & it had a very nice atmosphere. My aunt & I really enjoyed my birthday dinner. We arrived at the restaurant @ 3:30 but they weren't yet open for dine- in customers. They opened at 4:30 & it was well worth the wait!

I love coming here to eat. It is always a pleasure. Make sure you bring your masks. I always get the steak and sushi. Always so fresh and delicious! Cant wait to come again soon.

Came in on a very regular Saturday evening. Waited 15 minutes to sit down on the bar side because the painfully slow and irritated bus boy couldn't handle cleaning the dirty yet empty table we were supposed to wait for. After sitting down, the bartender comes over looking totally wasted and orders our drinks but forgets what we both asked for, twice! Then our sushi order came out wrong and we got a different roll than we ordered. No big deal except that they made us feel bad that the bartender would have to pay for it herself and I'm like, thats not my fault you put it in wrong. Just one little thing after the next that added up to a poor and annoying experience. I walked out paying much more for terrible sushi than I feel its worth and the poor service was enough to ensure I will never be back here. Ridiculous If you are after a nice classy meal for a date night or something, do not go here.. go anywhere else..

1st time ever i had something sub par(my son's chicken fingers were rubbery) also missed out the "live show" experience due to social distancing. I suggest calling ahead to reserve chef seating and as always expect to spend at least $100 if dining with others but know that its money well spent

Got carry out. I have no complaints. Food was ready on time. Wait staff was efficient and got the order straight the first time. Portions were as large as you would get if seated in the restaurant and food tasted great. Very sorry for these businesses and employees trying to survive on the reduced traffic.

Went last night, food was good, cook not great like other Kanki locations I've been to. Our server Shawn was amazing! Guy had me rolling when he brought my buddy out a pair of training chopsticks after he failed to use his properly. Shawn that was comedy gold.

We usually go to a sushi place near the Kangaroo Post Office, but that place is not doing two-for-one on rolls for takeout (they are pricey) and are not seating indoors. So we went to Kanki last night. We have been to Kanki for "dinner and a show" dozens of times, and have occasionally ordered a roll as an appetizer. Last night we ordered the Lava Shrimp appetizer, salads, and two full-size rolls. The shrimp (think bang-bang) was cooked perfectly and tossed in a not-too-hot sauce. The salad was obviously bagged salad mix, the dressing was okay but nothing special. The two rolls featured relatively thick-cut tasty fish and were very good. Andrew was wonderful. Plenty of food for two people. The list of specialty rolls was somewhat shorter than other places. We are considering Kanki for our new go-to sushi place.

This will be the first time of me being here! My husband and I travel from Jacksonville NC to come o Durham! This city is amazing! But this restaurant made my stay here ten times better! The sushi here is amazing! The waitress was extremely nice to us and very welcoming! The customer service here is amazing! I would ten out of ten recommended to anyone!
