I started coming to Da Kines about three years ago in search of an alternative to alcohol, and was thrilled to also find those who would eventually become my closest friends and family.
DK is a place to stop by on good days and bad, to gather in community with old friends and new, in a safe, supportive, atmosphere.
The drinks are phenomenal, the staff knowledgeable and welcoming. Elijah, Mia, Jess, Donya, Phoenix, and Nick can answer anything and everything about kava.
In addition, adjacent to DK is Plant Mama’s, which has as you might guess, plants, as well as other refreshments and gifts. Kari, Margaret, and Izzy enable my plant obsession, and are always down for a lively chat.
Owners Zoey & Brent have done something truly remarkable in creating a unique and treasured community hub, kava bar, and favorite hang out. 🌈 -
Been coming to Da Kine’s Kava for a number of years; it is a solid third space in Durham that occupied a nexus between cafe and a traditional bar. It attracts a number of different people, from local university students and remote workers in the Triangle to people looking for a place to hang out and unwind. DK has a great community and is a constructive space where the people seem focused on positivity and helping each other.
The employees there are all sweet and helpful. I was recently helped by two employees, Nick and Jess, who did a great job explaining the new drinks on the menu and then helped me assist a local woman in finding her lost cat. They both took the initiative.
Kava and Kratom teas have been consumed traditionally in various cultures and it’s great having an alcohol alternative that does not have many of the attendant health and social issues as alcohol. As someone who generally cares about healthy living and wellbeing, Da Kines compliments and dovetails nicely into that.
Da Kines is a wonderful space that I recommend to anyone looking to check out an alternative spot in the Triangle.

The most wonderful kava bar! I moved to Durham a few months ago, worried I wouldn’t make any friends and struggling in a new place. Da Kine’s saved me! Everyone is so incredibly friendly, the drinks are delicious, and the atmosphere is cute and cozy. I have made so many new friends and shared countless kava shots and boulas with them. 1000/10, would recommend to anyone and everyone. -
This place is incredible! I've been coming here for years. There are several kava and kratom drinks that actually taste really good, and great tasting THC and CBD drinks also if that's your thing, but that's nothing compared to the community. Come in, talk to the bar tenders, talk to anyone who's already talking to them or any group of people casually chatting, or to me! I have blue-green hair, usually some facial scruff, and my name is Margot 🙂 -
Absolutely my favorite place to go. The drinks are delicious, but the staff is truly the reason I keep coming back. Jess, Elijah, Mia, Phoenix, Donya, Nick — they are all so incredibly kind, knowledgable, and truly some of the coolest people I know. 10/10 recommend stopping by.
