Though the name has changed over the years, The Chicken Hut is the second-oldest continually operating restaurant in Durham, having served the Durham community since 1957. Not only are they known for their delicious and hearty fried chicken and barbecue meals, but also as a community gathering space. Today, The Chicken Hut remains a family-run business run by Tre Tapp, alongside his cousin and aunts. Tre is committed to continuing the legacy of his late beloved parents. In 2022, Eater named The Chicken Hut on a list of best fried chicken spots in America.

Heads up: this business is CASH ONLY.
However it is 1000% worth it. This place was recommended to us and it took us a while to find the time to visit as it’s only open for lunch M-F.
There is parking behind the building, on the street, or even the Food Lion parking lot. We didn’t realize it was a cash only establishment (don’t let that dissuade you!); we went to food lion and did cash back $40.
When you walk in there is a counter in front and a dining area to the right. You are to proceed to the dining area and join the line. There is no printed menu and the staff taking your order were extremely patient and welcoming, despite being slammed. They make fried chicken to order so it will be about 20-25 before you food is ready. They had other options if you’re pressed for time: baked chicken, baked spaghetti, BBQ ribs, and more. Your box (essentially a plate meal) comes with 2 sides of your choice (we did mac n cheese each, fried okra, and collards), along with a roll or hush puppies.
As you move down the line, you can pick up something sweet like a slice of cake or cobbler. Your meal includes a drink (lemonade, sweet tea, fruit punch, or water). They hand you a ticket with your order total which you will take back to the counter when you first entered. Our two plates (dark piece meals) were $16.99 each. Do not scoff at the price as this was a hefty amount of food for the price and they make it all in house and fresh.
The service was phenomenal and we were even treated to a slice of cake as it was our first visit. We will be eating here again, and would recommend to anyone looking for classic southern comfort food.

Utterly amazing food, exceptional service, and wonderful atmosphere. The owner is so kind and all the staff are warm and friendly. Without a doubt, THE BEST fried chicken here in Durham. Everything else we tried (oxtail, collards, cabbage and mac and cheese) were delicious. I have family coming to town next month and this is where I’m going to take them.

The Chicken Hut is a must visit! The crispiness and juiciness of the fresh fried chicken simply cannot be overstated. Hush puppies, mac and cheese, and cabbage were all wonderful as well. Service goes above and beyond. This family-owned business is a true gem of the community.

What an experience. I was greeted by very nice folks who were probably the owners of the place. The fried chicken was so juicy and crispy at the same time it was perfection. And the Mac was well seasoned and very tasty. The chocolate cake was soft and delicious.
Everything about this joint was absolutely amazing. I’m sorry to all the other spots, but this is the best fried chicken in North Carolina. Me and my big back will be back for more.

I love coming here when I go to Durham. My daughter loves the baked chicken and rice with collard greens. She also loves the baked spaghetti. Their mac and cheese is pretty good, one of my favorite items. The cake is a must! The yellow cake with chocolate icing and the strawberry cake are always so soft and delicious. They only take cash so make sure you have cash on hand when you go. If you’re looking for good soul food that you don’t have to spend all day in the kitchen for, this is the spot!

1st bad: I ordered thighs and arrived home with 2 breasts. Also, there are no menus. This place is cash only.
Now the good: hands down the best fried chicken in Durham, and likely surrounding areas. Perfectly seasoned and so darned crispy. I had high expectations, and I wasn't disappointed. The mac & cheese is worthy of all the praise. And the bug juice tasted like my childhood. (let the ice melt a little before going all in, unless you happen to be a child.).
Finally, the service: unreal! Just the kindest, most accommodating staff ever. It simply pleasant sitting there waiting for my chicken to arrive.
It's unfortunate this place is only open during lunch hours. Nevertheless, I WILL BE BACK!
