Overview
Though the name has changed over the years, The Chicken Hut is the second-oldest continually operating restaurant in Durham, having served the Durham community since 1957. Not only are they known for their delicious and hearty fried chicken and barbecue meals, but also as a community gathering space. Today, The Chicken Hut remains a family-run business run by Tre Tapp, alongside his cousin and aunts. Tre is committed to continuing the legacy of his late beloved parents. In 2022, Eater named The Chicken Hut on a list of best fried chicken spots in America.

I love the old fashion atmosphere. The food is seasoned with love. I watched the staff that knew customers by name, while answering new customer question with compassion. Yes, the food is fantastic! And you will get plenty. -
I always love visiting. The owner is so kind & always remembers me even though I come about 3 times a year only due to living out of town. The food is always consistent & delicious! They give you enough for almost two meals when you order just one. This place will always have a soft spot in my heart. I love it here & can’t recommend it enough. 🥰 -
Man, let me tell YOU…the Chicken Hut is the BOMB DOT COM!!!! I don’t even know where to start. This was my husband and I first time since we are in Durham NC very often…we just had to stop by this legendary restaurant that is a staple in the community and also a historic landmark in the City of Durham.
The customer service…top notch! The food make you want to slap yo mama and grandma…and even yo aunties! LOL.
I had the fried chicken, greens, Mac & cheese, potato salad with pound cake and lemonade.
My husband had the fried chicken, oxtails, greens, pintos, candied yams with lemon cake and grape koolaid and fruit punch….YES, WE WAS HUNGRY! LOL 😆 But that’s we prepared for…we came hungry and left full!!!!
If you are EVER IN DURHAM NC…you have to stop by the Chicken Hut located on Fayetteville St.
We will be back!!!! -
The line was 1o deep and I waited 20 minutes for hushpuppys. They had "baked chicken pieces" in gravy. That's what I ordered with collards and cabbage. When I got my Togo plate it had fried chicken. Everything tasted great. Didn't like the wait or not having what I ordered. Not sure I'll go back. -
Wow! This Spot is like that. It is a nice vibe to catch while waiting for hot fresh fried chicken. This is my first time trying this place out and it was a pleasure to be served by the owner. He walked me right through my experience. I waited about 12 mins for my food. As I waited it was so relaxing. I felt so honored. Way to Go ! I wish you all many more to come.
