It’s that time of year. The weather is cooler, the trees are putting on quite the show displaying their colorful leaves, and people young and old are flipping out about pumpkins. Whether you need pumpkins to carve or pumpkin-flavored foods to satisfy your pumpkin-craving tastebuds, Durham is full of wonderful places where you can get your pumpkin fix.

Where to Buy Pumpkins

'Tis the pumpkin season, so chances are you are looking for all kinds of pumpkins in all shapes and sizes right about now. Perkins Orchard, Holder Hill Farm, and The Durham Co-op all have pumpkins available for purchase.

Perkins Orchard, a unique fruit and vegetable stand located in the heart of Southeast Durham, celebrates its 50th season this year. Not only do they have a huge variety of pumpkins for sale, but for just $10, you can purchase a pumpkin paint kit and paint a pumpkin on-site or take it to go. Both children and adults can enjoy this great Fall activity!

With seven acres of pumpkin patch, Holder Hill Farm provides a wide variety of pumpkins to fit all family needs. The huge farm also has fun play areas, hayrides, corn mazes, and walking trails.

Bull City Ciderworks, located in the heart of downtown, crafts unique ciders made with 100% apple juice. They just released Jack and Oak, a pumpkin cider aged to perfection on American Oak. Yes, they do deliver or you can visit their Durham location with an outdoor space and fire pit.

Oak House

Are you ready for some pumpkin pie in a glass? If you said yes, then you have to try the seasonal drinks at the Oak House! The Oak House has both a light and spicy beer made with farm-grown pumpkins and a pumpkin spice latte beer brewed with seasonal spices, vanilla bean, and coffee roasted at the brewery. Also, be sure to try their cream stout brewed with organic pumpkin, flaked oats, and lactose called Javalantern.

Alley Twenty Six

Just in time for the holidays, Alley Twenty Six has a pumpkin pie syrup cocktail mixer that features clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon notes. Try it in their Jack Skellington Old Fashioned with Rye Whiskey (or Bourbon).

While many of the pumpkin foods we normally see are filled with sugar (no complaints), the Durham Food Hall with its ten miniature eateries by Triangle chefs, all with unique menus made from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, has some delicious savory pumpkin options.

Everything Bagel features locally-sourced gourmet bagels, avant-garde sandwiches, and bagel-burgers on Wednesdays-Sundays, and there’s a new pumpkin item on the menu. It’s a seasonal roasted black futsu pumpkin bagel with gremolata and pecans. If you want to get crazy, add on the spiced pumpkin seed butter spread with blended pumpkin pie spices, toasted pumpkin seeds, and honey.

Old North Meats & Provisions offers a seasonal rustic menu of house-made cured and smoked meats, fish, and pickled veggies, all locally sourced. For the fall, they have created a delicious sandwich with house smoked ham and spiced miso pumpkin butter slathered between union special French toast bread. Hungry yet?

Who needs a pumpkin spice twinkie (yes, that’s really a thing) when you have local, fresh-baked pumpkin treats and ice cream.

Head to Monuts, a bakery and cafe located in downtown Durham, and order the pumpkin chai doughnut. Currently, you can place an order via phone, order online, or walk up!

You will not regret a piece of the vegan pumpkin walnut cake (or the whole cake) or a pumpkin bar from the Ninth Street Bakery. They also have loaves of fresh bread made with pumpkin. The Fall Harvest Boule highlights the flavors of the season incorporating yellow cornmeal and pumpkin seeds, and the Danish Rugbod is a dense rye loaf with pumpkin and flax. You can place an order online for curbside pickup or touchless takeout.

With old-fashioned soda shop flare, Rockwood Dairy Bar, which opened in the Spring of this year, crafts freshly spun ice cream. Pumpkin pie ice cream is on their menu for the Fall.
