Science & Learning

Welcome to the brilliant Bull City.

Durhamites have invented the barcode, BC Headache Power, AZT, 3-D Ultra-sound, Astroturf, and LED lighting. Of course we have things to do and learn — Durham is home to science and learning every day.

The creative and scientific elements that make Durham a great place to live and work also make it a great place to learn and play. Unique educational opportunities abound. Durham is home to the world’s largest and most diverse collection of lemurs outside of their native Madagascar, housed at the Duke Lemur Center. Durham also has the Museum of Life and Science, 84 acres packed full of attractions designed to spark wonder and curiosity in guests of all ages. See one of the largest butterfly houses on the East Coast, walk a dinosaur trail with more than a dozen life-size dinosaurs and climb into Hideaway Woods; a two-acre nature discovery environment featuring eight tree houses, a flowing stream, and fanciful nature sculptures.

Durham takes the urge to learn seriously. Our schools attract some of the best students and researchers from around the world. The Research Triangle Park, one of the largest research parks in the country, is a center for cutting-edge innovation and exploration. Durham’s spirit of learning is contagious.
