Durham’s Civil Rights History is presented in a collaborative 2400 square foot mural design in Downtown Durham, under the direction of muralist Brenda Miller Holmes.
The stories documented in the mural were designed to reflect a painful past, as well as present issues of race and class in a city that is a state of transition and gentrification. The stories go beyond the mural itself into the lives of the characters who participate in this creative process. It is designed to be the cornerstone of educational outreach materials intended to help bring this story and process to other communities in the South.
