AMAZING!!!! We sat at the bar, Fred the bartender was phenomenal best server we've ever had. Everything was perfect. Food was just like home. Amazing atmosphere. We will be going back many times this is for sure.

The food and service is great! The ribs literally fall off the bones and the collards were so good that I almost drank the juice. The food was seasoned so well that we did not have to put anything on them, and I don't recall when I was able to do that. Plus, they offer complimentary valet parking. If you are in Durham, I would strongly recommend The Pit.

The food was good but not as good as I hoped it would be. Portion sizes were great! I had the fried catfish which was great & the sliced brisket which was just okay. They didn't have the spicy remoulade for the catfish nor did they have any green beans. The okra & macaroni & cheese were decent. Our server was attentive & helpful. I was mostly disappointed by the cleanliness. There were stains on the carpet & crumbs in the chairs. I asked our hostess to have the seat cleaned, but our server just moved us to another table. (We noticed that No one cleaned the seat while we were there.) The bottles of BBQ sauce on the table looked as if they hadn't been cleaned in a while, with dried sauce around the tops. I also noticed that their sanitation score was lower than I expected. Could be the reason why the restaurant was pretty empty on a Friday night.

Prefect experience again. When ever my family and I come to visit we just have to come to The Pit for the lip smacking food and welcoming atmosphere. Dakota was very friendly and accommodating. Great service with a smile! We will be back!!

Doesn't look like much from the outside, but this turned out to be one of the best BBQ spots I've been too. Split a combination plate, which was perfect for two. The traditional BBQ delighted both of us! Tender, juicy, and flavorful, each meat was smoked different complimenting the type of meat. The collards were the absolute best I've ever had, would go back just for them! Baked Mac and cheese can't go wrong. Will be bringing friends next visit

I'm a big fan of the pit. They have beer and banjos on Monday and that is always good. Staff is friendly and the place is huge. I believe they offer private event spaces and the decor is very rustic / in good taste. They offer valet parking which is great because parking can get scarce in the immediate area.

I have been here with coworkers twice now and enjoyed myself thoroughly both times. They have a great selection of meats and sides, service is always on point, and they always get my order right. The sauces are delicious, but the brisket in particular could be better.
The prices are also a bit higher than most other BBQ places, too.

Just finished having the Outside Brown Lunch---pulled pork with 2 sides. Large portion of smoked meat was delicious, sides were excellent. Ike was a fabulous waiter--knew the menu inside and out. His descriptions and recommendations were spot-on. He was very enthusiastic, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive, checking on us throughout our meal. Can't say enough about how good our experience was from start to finish!

Hit or miss??? My chicken and ribs were excellent and perfectly cooked, however my brother’s pork and brisket was very dry and disappointing. I’m definitely willing to give this place another shot - I hope to give a higher rating next time, there’s no doubt they have potential. The staff were truly a pleasure to work with. I’ll be back to try again!

If you have never been to the pit In downtown Durham NC I would definitely recommend you give this place a try because the food is really good and the service is really outstanding. One of my favorite things on the menu is pit bacon cheeseburger with a side of macaroni and cheese. The reason why I am giving this place five stars is because this is one of my favorite places to go and get barbecue in downtown Durham NC. The other things that I like about the place that is the people that work there are always very kind and welcoming to everyone in the reastreuant. And I will be telling my friends about this place so they can have the same experience with there family's that I had last Saturday.

The food was amazing. Everything we ordered was seasoned well. Portion sizes were great! I had a nice doggie bag. We went on a Sunday afternoon and unfortunately they were closing early for their staff meeting. I hope this accounts for the service we got. The hostess seated us, gave us menus and walked off. The next person bought us water, took our orders and left. A third person bought us our food. We didn't get any more service until we had to wave yet another person over to get take out plates and the bill. He apologized profusely and explained about the early closing. I won't let this prevent me from visiting again. And he gave us free fresh hushpuppies and biscuits to go. And they are good!!!

My father and I went and both ordered off of the pork section of the menu. The waiter was extremely friendly and even went the extra mile to bring us some collard greens to sample before we decided on sides (they were EXCELLENT). Pork was tender and flavorful, sauces complemented beautifully. Mac n cheese, collard greens, and bbq baked beans were all delicious. Great prices too!

The pit is a wonderful BBQ experience. Great joint located in downtown Durham. Only downside is you pay for it. The plates are a tad more expensive, although the price matches the quality, and it can be crowded sometimes. Love this little gem. Worth checking out if you're in the area and pry worth the trip if you're not. There are also some great bars in direct sight of the restaurant.

I had my first North Carolina barbecue here, and it was pretty good. Since it was my first time, I was surprised by how liquid and vinegary the sauces were, but hey, when in Rome, right? I did wish the eastern-style sauce were a little more spicy, though, because if you say that something is “spicy, so you don’t want to chug that down,” I’m expecting at least jalapeño spicy, not just black pepper spicy. Otherwise, the beef brisket was nice and soft. The baby back ribs were super smoky. And the chopped pork was, well, chopped pork. This barbecue was a nice departure from the sugary glazed meats of mass market products.
