Best pancake I’ve ever had in my life. Y’all, I cook delicious pancakes and I choose Jack Tar’s over mine EVERY TIME! Every dish we had was delicious. My daughter loved her burger and she is as picky an eater as they come. The poutine was scrumptious. The staff was wonderful, accommodating and nice. Go here!

Neither disappointed or impressed, I anticipated getting a higher end burger n wings! Very good over all! Only con I experienced was my date didn't get all the topings she asked for. Simple mistake, no big deal. Atmosphere and service was good too

Update: on two recent weekday visits the restaurant only had one server on opening. It slowed down service a lot. On the second visit another person helped by delivering dishes, but even so the service was slow. Just had breakfast here. Nice option near the hotels. The pancakes are delicious but heavy! 😋 The syrup was really good! The bacon is nice and thick. Good hash browns too. The coffee is just OK. There was more toast than I could eat. We were there on a Saturday morning and the place was quickly bustling.

I've only been here twice, but both times it was fantastic. The best comparison I can think of is a typical American diner... But fancier. The food is priced a little high but very very good. I've gotten breakfast both times I've visited and been very impressed. Food comes out quick and sevice is also on the ball, so it's great even for a quick lunch.

Adult yumm. Pancakes, bone marrow, fresh donuts. Maybe start next door at the taproom. It's a great atmosphere and the outdoor tables are great if the weather is on your side. If you need anything special it can't hurt to ask; everyone is super cool and want you to have a great experience.

It was a warm morning so we decided to sit outside. A nice seating area can be found right in front of the restaurant. The first thing that struck us was the prices. For a basic 2-egg breakfast with hash browns, it's $11.00. That is VERY expensive for a BASIC breakfast. Food was okay, not bad. Service was good. We came here only because we were staying next door and it was convenient. Overpriced. Probably would not return here when I am back in town.

One of the best places in Durham to get lunch/brunch! My bf got one of the best looking stacks of pancakes I've ever seen, and I got a tomato pie, which felt like a combination of a tomato mayo sandwich and savory pie (two of my favorite things!) It's a little pricier than other breakfast places like Elmo's Dinner, but totally worth it in my opinion.

Loud. Weird aesthetic, not sure what they're going for. Limited menu--I wasn't feeling well and couldn't find anything that wasn't fancified. That said, my husband loved his meal (catfish). The collards were amazing. The mac & cheese had good flavor but was oddly watery. We both loved the peach pie paired with peach ice cream.

This place is described as a diner bit other than the counter, not much about that word describes the place. The food on this menu is superb. Even the pancakes are head and shoulders above anything that has ever been described that way. The decor is equally fine and the wait staff were total pros. I would recommend this place for any meal of the day.

I really liked this restaurant. I went around lunch time on a Saturday and was able to get a seat at the back bar immediately which is impressive. The ambience felt like an airy, breezes, brunch spot. I ordered the pancakes and the eggs your way because I was so overwhelmed with the menu I could not decide what to get. I kind of wanted to try the turducken sausage but went with eggs instead. The pancakes are huge, fluffy, and delicious. I think some of the best pancakes I’ve had if you like fluffy regular pancakes. You can add berries or chocolate chips but I got them plain. I also had some delicious eggs. I’m normally worried about the eggs at restaurants but these were great. I would definitely come back here for brunch, lunch or dinner.

It's my first time here. I ordered NC fried catfish and beverage is Bull Durham light Ale. Food is great but just a little tired in the end. I definitely will ordered the other dishes next time. Server is excellent and friendly.

On the last night out with our good friend visiting from across the continent, this was a fabulous choice! All our entrees were designed and cooked to perfection! A casual evening of above average cuisine! ❤️

Love this place. We choose our hotels in Durham to be as close as possible to Jack Tar for breakfast. It may seem like a strange comment, but the best toast I’ve had. Excellent fried potatoes as well.

I had the most exquisite ravioli here. The Piedmontese Ravioli Plin were (was?) beyond anything I expected: Small, delicate, extremely tasty… I had wanted a small meal, and this filled the bill perfectly. I ate in the bar —it was a little bit quieter than the restaurant side of the business. The barkeep was affable, and checked on my satisfaction regularly. He also liked my choice of a local craft beer.

Fun upscale diner with great all day breakfast options. The pancakes were huge and delicious! Burgers and fries looked amazing too.

I was over in Durham this week visiting from the UK and had the best ever burger I’ve eaten! Sooooo tender and delicious with a jalapeño hit - off the scale! I’d love to know how you cook them? Tim

Absolutely amazing doughnuts and other incredibly fresh meals. But seriously get the CRULLERS! Also the avocado toast is great.

We went for an early Sunday brunch. We were sat prety quickly. Our party was Me, my Wife, two grand kids, Stepson and his Wife. Our drinks were prompt and order was taken. There was a problem with our ticket, maybe got lost or something. ( my wife and I both work in a kitchen and know these things happen) but the way the servers and management handled the problem was very impressive. They brought out a couple of doughnuts for the kids who were getting restless. ( a 2 and a 4 year old) and the manager (I believe) brought us a gift card and apologized for the wait and told us our food would be next. As for the food, it was great we were all very pleased. The portions were large, and the flavors amazing. A potential nightmare turned into a great Brunch experience, we will definitely be coming back.

My wife and I love trying out new places around Durham. We’ve been wanting to check this place out, so we decided to grab brunch. The place was packed, so we sat at the bar. If we hadn’t, there was a long line of people waiting. The food was pretty fast. We shared an avocado toast, which was very tasty. We also had an order of freshly made crullers, which were covered in sugar and cinnamon, that came with raspberry and mascarpone cheese filling. These were yummy! However the fries weren’t quite successful. I wished we had ordered something different. I gave a four for a couple of reasons - the price and service. It was a little pricey and the service was pretty slow.

Everything you want in a downtown food stop. Breakfast all afternoon (amazing Benedict), great sandwiches and fries, something for every palate! Beer on tap, hell of a Bloody Mary, and the servers are always super friendly.

My wife and I couldn’t find anyplace to eat after a show we saw this Sunday March 8. We came in and were just going to have burgers but got really intrigued in the menu and I got the raviolis in brown butter sauce these were delightful and my wife had the squash dumpling and kale with mushroom served with a crema and I don’t like kale and that whole dish was awesome. Place was busy but we got served right away and didn’t wait long for dinner. When we return to Durham I’ve found my spot for a real good dinner

Jack Tar is one of those sneaky Durham restaurants that you have to know when to visit. The first few times we went were late night ventures, and I think this is one of the times that Jack Tar shines. Go out drinking in Durham and stagger in to Jack Tar for some drunk person food (pro-tip, the poutine is perfect for this). We've also gone for dessert after dinner downtown, and again -- it shines here. There's not loads of people, you can grab seats at the counter no problem. We have tried to pop in for lunch and been overwhelmed at how many people are in the restaurant. So, like with many places in Durham, you just have to be smart about when you visit. But when you do visit, you will not be dissapointed.

I really want to like Jack Tar and the Colonel's Daughter, as the food is generally quite tasty. Every time we've been there, it's taken a very long time to get our food and this most recent time, it took about 20 min to be acknowledged by a server, then our food took longer than 4 groups of 2 that arrived after our group of 2. The food isn't sequenced such that fast apps or snacks go out first. We sat at the counter and could see some frustration in the kitchen, too. I also have to sincerely hope that the restaurant is not satisfied with an 84.5 health inspection score.

Stop in for breakfast on a Saturday morning. It was pretty busy, but the wait wasn't too bad. The decor had a retro theme, with a modern feel. We shared the breakfast sandwich and a slice of coffee cake. Everything was delicious. We'll have to stop back by for lunch or dinner.

We went to this place accidentally, but feel in love with it from the moment we stepped in. The open kitchen and modern decor, combined with warm staff was all very welcoming. We meant to stop for a drink n snack but ended up having our meal here. The honeysuckle cocktail was light and refreshing. The pimento cheese and crackers was one of the best I've tasted. I've never seen a fried smelt fish on the menu anywhere else. It was unique and delicious. The tomato soup n homemade croutons were hearty. Finally, the shrimp banh mi sealed the deal. It was a great sandwich. We had a lovely time and will come back for more, as they had some very interesting items on their menu.
