An Out-Of-The-Box Durham Retail Guide

Estimated Read Time:
3 minutes

Gone are the predictable days when weird socks, only marginally fragrant candles, and scratchy scarves sufficed as gifts when winter was underway. We've put together an out-of-the-box guide to gift giving in Durham to help you do better.

This holiday season, try gifting one-of-a-kind Durham experiences. Durham’s collection of unique classes, events, and performances as well as hotels, entertainment venues, and restaurants will help you find a truly creative gift for your family and friends. What's more, local entrepreneurs have created online stores of Durham-made products that you can purchase from the comfort of your own home. Read on for some truly unique shopping ideas!

Gift Relaxation

For a gift that is sure to get some use after the holidays are over, head to the 21c Museum Hotel Durham for a gift card to the hotel spa. Spa guests can enjoy a workout at the gym or a session in the sauna or steam room prior to their treatment of a massage, body mask, or wrap. For wellness that will last into the new year, pick up a five-class pass from Carolina Yoga Company, or a drop-in class pass for a friend or family member to use the next time they visit Durham.

Some may ask, what’s more relaxing than a glass of wine? Durham-based Honeygirl Meadery specializes in meads (honey wines) made with seasonal fruits, flowers, herbs, and honey in flavors such as hibiscus lemon-thyme, strawberry, and blueberry. Luckily for the oenophile in your life, they recently partnered with VinoShipper to ship online orders to 35 states.

Gift a Night Out

Durham is home to two of the most celebrated entertainment venues in the Southeast. For a fun night out on the town, give the gift of live performances with a certificate to either the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC), or the Carolina Theatre. Gift certificates to DPAC can be purchased online and can be used for any event, from concerts to touring Broadway shows (like Hamilton), while gift certificates to the Carolina Theatre must be purchased at the box office and can be used towards both event tickets and concession items.

Gift a New Skill

Treat your best friend to a dance party at Ninth Street Dance where you both can register for a dance workshop without committing to an entire block of classes. Recent options included disco, cumbia, hip hop, and salsa. At HappymessART, the ever popular ARTini painting class is a great gift to share with family members. You bring your own snacks and alcohol while the studio provides art supplies, aprons, wine glasses, music, and instruction in a two-hour painting session.

For the wannabe chef in your life, cooking classes at Sur la Table at the Streets at Southpoint are a fantastic way to learn a new cuisine or to perfect culinary skills. Finally, give a gift to your little ones that you can experience with them! We recommend parent and child fiber and textile workshops with the Durham Arts Council, or kid-friendly events at Northgate Mall.
